Toh Soon Cafe, Georgetown, Penang 多春茶座

My Penang kaki (friend) Irene had been raving about this back lane Toh Soon kopitiam since the day I arrived on the island. It was only on the seventh and final day before we found time to pop by Irene's favourite breakfast haunt, despite food touring Penang at whirlwind pace. There were just too many great food places to cover in Penang.

Gosh.... after I returned home and write up my Penang experiences, I plain forgotten about Toh Soon ;-p Until KF Seetoh mentioned it during his current trip (Jan 2016) to Penang and it jolted my memory about this quaint Malaysia/ old Singapore style coffee joint. Irene's favourite somemore - my bad ;-p

Toh Soon was full house as usual.

When Irene was with a newspaper, she used to gather here with her colleagues, and so did the lawyers, accountants and other media people working nearby. And, not a few tourists as well.

Part of Irene and my breakfast at Toh Soon.

Of course, to come to an old school Malaysia / Singapore kopitiam and not order a Nanyang coffee is a major crime.

Toh Soon's aromatic coffee is flavoursome. It is good - and many, many people think that it is the very best. (Just look at the numerous comments in Foursquare.)

Another must have is Toh Soon's crispy airy kaya toast. (They also serve steamed bread, which is rare in Singapore.)

Toh Soon's toasts are freshly grilled over charcoal fire.

Yet another must try.

Half boiled eggs in a cup eaten with a dash of light soy sauce and a puff of white pepper.

Another uniquely Malaysia / Singapore breakfast :-D Dip kaya toast in Nanyang coffee. The sweet kaya, butter and bitter sweet coffee makes a delicious wet spongy treat.

Nasi lemak in brown paper wrap. Rice boiled in fragrant coconut milk eaten simply with fried Ikan Bilis, a quarter of hard boiled egg, some fried peanuts and a dollop of sambal chili. Gone in two mouthfuls but a lifetime of addiction.

->> In Penang and want to experience a taste of old school Nanyang breakfast? Come to Toh Soon Cafe.
