I first stumbled upon Parr't E'Belle while exploring the street side stalls outside SM City mall for local food. My second and third times were at the courtesy of my gracious Philippines hosts. And, every time I spoke with Cebuanos about hometown food, they always mention Parr't E'Belle. I'll say a trip to Parr't E'Belle is a must, if you a foodie visiting Cebu.

Parrt E'Belle is famous for it's sinugba - large chunks of fresh fish and other seafood grilled over a bed of red hot charcoal. They also serve grilled chicken and pork.

I am in awe with huge chunks of tasik (large sea catfish) and marlin on the charcoal grill. The pristine seas off Cebu are rich with seafood.

The slightly crisp outside of the chunk of tasik fish was sweet and smoky. The inside was a little fibrous but still moist due to the sheer thickness of the chunk of fish. The tasik chunk had the natural flavour of fish which I like.

Grilled tasik fish loin. More pronounced fish flavour and more interesting texture with meat, skin, fat and gelatinous parts.

The slab of marlin (malasugi) in the fish soup or tinola (in Cebuano). Tinola is a soup made by boiling fish, tomatoes, ginger, chillies, onions, fish sauce and salt. The slab of marlin was boiled till a little stiff but we can still taste the fresh fish's natural flavours.

Grilled Liempo (Filipino style grilled pork), a little like Cantonese style char siew but drier, less sweet and has less fat.

Grilled cuttlefish.

Delicious tinola (fish soup) is served "free flow".

Local rice is a little starchy and cooked a little soft but has a nice flavour.

Parr't E'Belle is usually crowded during lunch time as it is very popular with locals for good but affordable seafood. Many consider it the best in Cebu. It is best to come a little early before the peak lunch hours.

->> A visit to Cebu must include a visit to it's largest shopping mall, SM City. And, while there, if you are game to go local, Parr't E'Belle would be a good choice.

  1. Please change the cellphone number of this blog. People are calling me instead of the restaurant itself.
