When I arrived at Stone Age at Blk 218 Bedok North Street 1 where my friend Wiliam suggested we meet for lunch, I know the food will be good - I know his taste. But, looking at the rather ornate decor at the restaurant, my first thought to myself was this place is going to be quite expensive.
But, at the end of our scrumptious lunch, I had to eat my own words to myself. Stone Age serves great food in a nice setting at good value prices :-D
Take this Stone Pot Grilled Sea Bass, for example.
The fresh sea bass fish is grilled to a slight crisp outside while still tender and moist inside. The golden brown fish is then served in a pot bubbling hot with a Chongqing (China) inspired mildly savoury, tangy, spicy sauce - it's delicious.
This dish is normally sold at SGD32.80.
For the month of Feb 2016, we can get this Stone Pot Grilled Sea Bass for SGD16.80.
I say, go grab it.

Can't really see much from this picture of the Pepper Pig Tripe Chicken Soup (SGD21.80).
Under that round bodied cloudy soup were tender meaty chunks of fresh kampung chicken, spongy strips of tripe, soft tofu cubes and lots of juicy fresh vegetables which gave the peppery savoury soup the sweet balance.
If you love peppery pork tripe soup, you will love this. I am quite certain.
Fish Head Steam Pot 鱼头炉 SGD25.80.
Fresh Red Snapper fish head chopped into chunks and cooked in a savoury sweet seafood and chicken broth made together with lots of vegetables like enoki mushrooms, yam, cabbages and seaweed.
Original Coconut Chicken Soup SGD21.80.
The pot is filled with fresh coconut juice and then the fresh kampung chicken and vegetables are dropped inside to boil for seven minutes.
The clear broth based on coconut juice was sweet and had a refreshing coconut flavour. The kampung chicken was tender and naturally sweet.
This is an interesting change from the usual savoury sweet soup, worth a try.
Stone Pot Curry Fish Head SGD25.80.
The fresh Red Snapper fish head with lots of vegetables like egg plant, lady's fingers and cabbage is cooked in a thick creamy sweet and mildly spicy curry with coconut milk.
People who like fresh fish and sweet mildly spicy curry will especially enjoy this.
There are lots of sides like this Pork Floss Eggplant SGD8.
House made Bean Curd with Minced Pork.
Nicely executed Sambal Sweet Potato Leaves SGD6.
Olive Fried Rice. We all liked this flavoursome rice fried with good wok hei which gave the rice a nutty feel and toasty flavour.
->> Stone Age is a good place for quality soups and familiar homely dishes at prices comparable with most suburban HDB zhi char restaurants. I drank lots of soup today and didn't feel any MSG thirst as Stone Age uses fresh natural ingredients in it's soups.

Pork Floss Eggplant sounds innovative but what did it taste like? was the pork floss deep fried with the eggplant?
ReplyDeleteYeah it's pork floss fried with eggpplant. I am not a fried floss person. It's ok, can eat but I am too busy enjoying the various soupy dishes :-D
Deleteoh taste is mildly savoury sweet and soft crsipy floss and soft spongy fried eggplant with slight crisp outside.
DeleteThe soups look great. I notice the prices are in the $20-30 range, are they for individual or to be shared by a few pax?
ReplyDeleteTerrible experience at Stone Age, charges $2 PER PERSON for a sad paper towel, tea and some miserable serving of nuts. Small portion sizes (barely enough for 2 people). Change of owner caused quality to go down. Now pork floss eggplant only have 6 sad pieces! Super rude service staff refused to take back the "extra set" of papertowel!!! DO NOT RECOMMEND!!
ReplyDeleteYes, I heard the restaurant has changed management. I have not been back for over a year.
