10 Polish Restaurants in Warsaw, Lodz, Torun, Gdansk for Memorable Food Tour in Poland

During our memorable 5 day road trip in Poland, we travelled from Warsaw through Lodz and Torun to Gdansk before turning back to the Polish capital city.

My first dinner in Poland was in downtown Warsaw's Mokotowska 69 restaurant which is housed in a quaint, small but distinction little round building.

The interior of Mokotowska 69 is full of warmth with red, brown hues of wood, brick and golden glow of lamps.

Mokotowska 69 specialises in traditionally influenced Polish cuisine. They also offer premium steaks like Black Angus and Tajima Beef, as well as a good selection of wines.

We went to popular Mototowska 69 restaurant in Warsaw for our first dinner in Poland. For my main course, I chose Masurian Catfish as I was keen to try a local fish. This catfish came from Poland's northwest Mansuria Lake District which boasts over 2,000 lakes. ๐ŸŸ The large, thick slab of grilled catfish was set on a creamy white mound of mildly spicy horseradish risotto. The fish meat browned outside was white, flaky, tender and moist inside. It tasted savoury (from seasoning) with slight earthiness and underlying sweetness. The sweet risotto grains were tender with subtle nuttiness and the rice mound was held together by the creamy zesty horseradish sauce. ๐ŸŽ A couple of crunchy balls carved from Polish Paradise apple complete the dish. ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿด It was a great start to my first Polish culinary adventure. #polandtastesgood ๐Ÿ˜‹

Though not strictly a restaurant, the Polish Vodka Museum should be on your agenda too, especially if you are a vodka enthusiast. Come even if you are only drink an occasional vodka because you will be swept off your feet by the fascinating story (going back to the Middle Ages) of Poland's national spirit (which is like whiskey to Scots and sake to Japanese).

The museum's large collection of vintage Polish vodkas is so interesting, it made me want to start collecting vodka myself ๐Ÿ˜„

Which country invented vodka? Well, the secrets of distillation were first formulated in Spain in the Middle Ages. It spread westwards through France and Germany to Poland which created Wodka with the technology. From Poland, the know-how spread further east to Russia, so there you have your answer ๐Ÿ˜„

From Warsaw (stopping a while in Lodz), we headed north to Gozdawa Palace near Wloclawek. Gozdawa Palace is a popular place for banquets such as weddings.

At Gozdawa Palace, we met flamboyant masterchef Piotr Lenart who showed us how he prepares a huge Polish goose and how he uses every part of the bird for different dishes.

There was a lot of dishes to taste but I couldn't stop myself from going 3 rounds for this amazing goose tartare.

Our next stop was Torun (between Lodz and Gdansk). Again, strictly not a restaurant but how can we come to the gingerbread capital of the world and not visit The Museum of Torun Gingerbread?

Poland Tastes Good. Food & Sightseeing Itinerary 2020

Gingerbread was first made in Torun in the 14th century. Famed for their spice flavours, aromas, and attractive designs, Torun became famous as the gingerbread capital of the world. We learned how to make gingerbread at The Museum of Torun Gingerbread which is located in a 19th century gingerbread factory.

Brovarnia in Gdaล„sk is one of Poland's most popular microbreweries. All Brovarnia beers – three varieties every night which will include a dark beer are all brewed in house. The huge copper kettles are in full view from the bar. At Brovarnia, the beers go from brewing tanks straight to the taps at the bar, so you get only the freshest brew.

Cheers from Brovarnia Gdaล„sk microbrewery.

Besides their famous beers, Brovarnia has a full fledged restaurant serving traditional Polish as well as international cuisine.

Gdaล„sk’s most famous restaurant, no doubt and also the oldest operational one - Pod ลososiem was founded in 16th century.

"Pod ลososiem" which means "Under the Salmon" hosted many dignitaries through its history including Thatcher, Bush Sr., Britain’s Princess Anne and Lech Waล‚ฤ™sa. Pod ลososiem's menu includes local and international cuisine.

For our lunch at the historic restaurant we were treated to appetisers of herring, which is an important fish in Polish life. For centuries, it is eaten before religious fasting. Poles prepare and enjoy herring in a thousand ways.

At "Pod ลososiem", we sampled herring fish prepared in four different ways. Clockwise from top left, traditional herring smothered in sour cream; owner's heirloom recipe salad of herring with onion, butter, and eggs; herring in Thai inspired savoury sauce with spicy and zesty notes; herring with tomato sauce. My favourite is the heirloom salad as I like its blend of gentle savoury sweet eggy flavours.

For main course, I had a slab of pan seared zander fish (pike perch) on dill sauce.

A traditional Polish meal is best enjoyed along with a glass of chilled Polish vodka. We were fortunate that our hosts generously indulged us with Goldwasser vodka which contains gold flakes. The legendary Goldwasser vodka was first distilled right here at Pod ลososiem back in 1598. It was known then in German as Der Lachs or The Salmon.

On the way back from Osada Dankow to Warsaw, we stopped at Karczma Pod Strzecha Dzierลผenin for lunch. It's the restaurant of a tavern.

I like its mainly traditional wood construction, high roof, natural wood finishing on its wood furnishings, and also a flaming log fireplace. It has a comforting homely country feel. It is a big bonus that it also serves one of my most memorable meals from this Poland trip.

Recommended for you ๐Ÿ‘ Poland is a great place for fine food whether in fine restaurants or homely family style eateries. Polish home grown farm products are top notch and the restaurants use fresh produce and catches. Polish chefs are passionate about their craft and proud of their traditional cuisine. It is a bonus that cost of living in Poland is relatively affordable and their restaurants offer great value.
