Tekka Centre Best Hawker Food Adventure @ Singapore's Little India

Tekka_Centre_Little_India

Tekka Centre located in Singapore's Little India is a foodie haven, especially of Indian cuisine though the hawker centre has Malay, Chinese, Western and even Sri Lankan stalls.

There are some 100 food stalls here. Tekka Centre is Singapore's briyani central as it has the highest concentration of briyani stalls in one hawker centre.

I have not yet tried every single stall in Tekka Market but these are the 10 most popular stalls. (The stalls are listed according to their stall numbers, not by popularity ranking.)

Top 3 Most Popular Stalls

Allauddin’s Briyani stall #01-232 is the most famous of the spice flavoured rice stalls at Tekka Centre. Their basmati rice is well infused with spice flavours and aromas. Their chicken and mutton are cooked separately from the rice i.e. not dum briyani style. But, the chicken is tender, juicy and rich with chicken sweetness as well as infused spice flavours. I have not tasted their mutton yet but heard that it is very good too. Their achar (pickled vegetable) is okay but I love their mutton curry which they serve together with the set at $6 (2020 price).

Temasek Indian Rojak / Haji Johan Indian Muslim Food stall #01-254 offers a wide range of fried fritters including exotic items like beef lung, chicken liver, etc. The items are well fried - crisp and have no seeping oil residue but only lightly marinated / seasoned. The sauce is just mildly sweet spicy with a bit of soften crushed peanut inside.

Temasek Rojak's sauce is a little too mild, lacks depth and kick in my opinion but their selection of fried fritters is impeccable.

545 Whampoa Prawn Mee stall #01-326 is the stall with the longest queue at Tekka Centre. Run by the third generation now, it serves an old school prawn noodle. There's "dry" and soupy versions. The good size prawns are fresh, the soup's umami flavours robust, and the lard laced sambal chili sauce used in the dry version is delicious, hence the longest queue.

Other Popular Stalls

Sri Tiffin Stall #01-224 is popular for their dosai (masala & plain) and vadai (methu & masala).

Sky Lab Cooked Food stall #01-228 serves many different types of appam, dosai, vadai, samosa and other Indian street food.

Prata Saga Sambal Berlada stall #01-258 make their own dough and serves prata with freshly flipped dough fried on order. The plain bread (prata kosong) is not the crispiest but the old school, nicely stretchy and chewy type. Comes with a good mutton or fish curry.

Yakader Muslim Food stall #01-259 serves dum briyani and is one of the most popular at Tekka Market. Chicken or lamb is cooked embedded in the huge pot of basmati rice dum briyani style. The rice is rich with spices and the chicken or lamb is tender and juicy. (Flavours are milder than at Allauddin Briyani.)

Generation Coffee stall #01-321 serves both traditional Nanyang kopi (Robusta & Arabica beans blend) and hipster specialty coffee (Arabica beans). Generation roast their own coffee beans and ground them fresh at the stall before brewing them with a modern shiny espresso machine. Give Generation Coffee a try - the brews are interesting and prices are probably the lowest in Singapore for specialty coffee.

Heng Gi Goose and Duck Rice stall #01-335 serves a nice braised duck but no goose nowadays. A very old stall founded in the 1950s at the old Thong Chai hospital (near Clarke Quay). Now run by the founder's former workers. The duck is braised till tender and well infused with savoury-salty flavours. The duck is cut into chunky pieces, so it can be chewy. They also have duck web feet, liver and gizzard. (Ah Heng braised duck at Albert Centre is run by descendants of Heng Gi's founder.)

Truth be told, I haven't tasted every stall at Tekka Centre. So, if your favourite stall is not mentioned in this list, just give me a shout out in the comments. I will double down to Tekka Centre to taste your recommendation 👌 Thank you in advance for helping me make this list better 🙏
