Honest Review of Song Kee Fishball @ 100 Yio Chu Kang. Flagship Stall of Top Singapore Fishball Noodle 松记餐室

Today, I finally tasted the famous Song Kee fishball and her kiao fish dumpling at their flagship stall at 100 Yio Chu Kang Road. It is next to Serangoon Stadium and 10 - 15 minutes walk from Serangoon MRT station.

The Song Kee stall at 100 Yio Chu Kang Road has a charming, rustic, welcoming feel to the place. It is airy, bright, clean and spacious.

Two of us, we each had a large serving with one of everything inside.

In the bowl was a mound of noodles with sauce, various forms of fishball, fish roll, a fish dumpling (her kiao or herh keow) and a fried tofu (tau pok) stuffed with fish paste.

Song Kee's fish products are made with yellowtail fish. (I took this picture at the fish market to show you what is yellowtail fish. It is not from Song Kee shop 😄 )

Soon Kee's famous fishballs were dense with a firm-tender springy crunch to the bite which releases subtle fresh fish flavour and aroma. All the other forms of fishball and roll have slightly different textures and mouth feel but taste and smell similar.

The stand out was their her kiao fish dumpling 潮汕鱼饺. It's basically a wanton with the wrap (skin) made of a thin rolled paste of fish meat and tapioca flour.

The thin stretchy skin had a nice chewy-crunch to the bite and tasted slightly sweet of fresh fish. The knob of minced pork inside was spiked with grainy bits of tee poh (dried sole fish) which we can feel in the bite. The tee poh umami was quite pronounced, overlaying the sweet taste of pork.

The fishballs and fish dumplings were so good that the noodles felt just obligatory (to me). The tender noodles had a springy-crunch to the bite but wasn't the gummy chewy kind that I like. The sauce was a blend of savoury, tangy, spicy, lardy flavours typical of those at popular fishball noodle / bak chor mee stalls. Flavourful enough but not really memorable.

We enjoyed the fish dumplings so much that we followed up with an additional order of dumpling soup.

The soup was clear and clean tasting with subtle natural fish sweetness. Might taste bland for some (though I like it).

Song Kee is all about their fishballs and fish dumpling, and for me, especially the latter.

The nice kampung / small town setting makes eating here particularly enjoyable.

If you are a fan of fishball and her kiao, especially her kiao, also give Chao Yang at Eunos Crescent Food Centre a try. They are related to the Song Kee clan but is an independent stall that make their own fishball and her kiao 👈 click
