After a big lunch, as usual Aaron will need a little more before he feels full. So, I suggested coin prata at 24 Sin Ming Road since I heard so much about it but haven't tried it yet. Since we were here, Aaron ordered coffee and toast as well 🤷 The coin prata was nice but it turned out that it was Charcoal Traditional Toast that wowed me.
I wanted kopi C kosong. When uncle brought the kopi, he said "This is kopi C ka tai (i.e. extra sugar added), do you still want it"? He offered to change it for me right away, if I won't accept it. I told him without a moment's hesitation, never mind lah... . (I am slightly diabetic, but I won't die from one cup of kopi C ka tai... I thought to myself 🤔 )
Turned out that uncle was just pulling my leg... it was kopi C kosong... .
Uncle very zee seow (naughty) as we say in Singlish.
Pardon the long digression, anyway, the kopi was good, very good, in fact. Nice round body thickened with evaporated milk. The bitterness of the robusta beans was moderated and balanced by the evaporated milk's sugary sweetness. The concoction packed quite a caffeine kick.
I like it.
The menu is limited and simple. #1 Traditional Toast which is sliced white bread toast. #2 French Toast which is baguette toast (not French toast, French toast, you know what I mean... ). #3 Space Bun 太空包 is not longer available. "Returned to space" in uncle's zee seow style.
"French Toast".
Inside, the charcoal toasted baguette was generously slathered with kaya (coconut jam) and slotted with 2 thick slices of butter.
Pardon the teeth marks. Took a bite out of the baguette before taking this picture.
I love the crackly crispy shell of the toasted baguette. The inside was fluffy and well lined with not-overly-sweet, fragrant coconut jam. The kaya's sweetness was complemented by savouriness from the smooth melt-in-the-toast butter.
Shiok lah.
Henry, a stranger who shared the table with us 定力不够 cannot resist, bought this after finishing his chap cai png lunch. Yeah....., we are bad "influencers" 🤦
Charcoal Traditional Toast is now my benchmark for kaya-butter toast,
replacing Ah Weng Kor of the old Imbi Market in Kuala Lumpur. Sorry Ah
Weng Kor, my 20-year old gold standard for kaya-butter toast - I found a new love toast.
Next time, when I need a coffee break and a light snack around Sin Ming area, Charcoal Traditional Toast will be at the top of my mind.
