If you have been to Singapore Chinatown during the last two years, you might have stumbled upon an artist painting or drawing a street scene. He is non other than Tung Yue Nang 邓汝能.
From his friendly, unassuming demeanour passersby may not realise that Tung Yue Nang is an internationally renowned artist and recipient of many prestigious art awards and honours since the 1970s.
It is my privilege to spend a day with Tung Yue Nang at his beautiful home which is also his studio and gallery.
Tung Yue Nang's approach to life and artistic style are influenced by the Chinese philosophy and principles of Tao Te Ching 道德经 like harmony and balance.
At age fifteen, Tung Yue Nang became a disciple of Shi Xiang Tuo 施香沱, master calligrapher, seal engraver and Chinese ink painter.
Tung's ceramic and sculpture master was Ng Eng Teng 黄荣庭, the Grandfather of Singapore Sculpture.
Tung's works which dotted around his house have the Ng Eng Teng DNA.
I like the ceramic tea pot which Tung is holding. It reminds me of a squirrel 🐿️
Tung draws inspiration from his travels around the world, Southeast Asia and Singapore, his birthplace and home. Beautiful things, experiences and memories from his travels are reflected in Tung's work.
His home is chock-a-block with memorabilia from his extensive travels. This is a traditional Balinese calendar, a place where Tung drew a lot of inspiration.
Tung is fascinated by the beauty, colour and history of Peranakan culture.
Tung's art combines Western art concepts and media with Chinese philosophy and techniques. His inspirations are at once global and hyperlocal.
Recently, Tung has been preoccupied with painting and sketching Singapore Chinatown. The lady inspecting Tung's work is Ah Ying Jie, one of Singapore's last Samsui women.
Tung's residence has many idyllic spaces that nurture his Tao Te Ching philosophy and inspire his art.
In the last two years, Tung has painted and sketched numerous pieces covering every aspect of Chinatown.
Precise intricate details on every inch of the Chinese ink brush painting are signatures of Tung's style.
When you zoom into the details, you will see tranquility and peace juxtaposed against the busy backdrop.
Tung is also known for his sensitive portrayal and human touch in his art.
So many beautiful pieces, I was particularly attracted to this one about 雪花飛 the oldest ice kacang stall in Singapore.
Whether you want to watch Tung Yue Nang in action, wish to visit his studio / gallery, or commission a painting, you can reach him through Facebook.
