Went to Golden Mile Food Centre for lunch after my medical appointment. Famous, old school Kheng Fatt Hainanese Beef Noodles (established 1978) just opened for the day, so I settled for it.
The day was off to a slow start this Monday morning. The whole Golden
Mile Food Centre had quietened under the shadow of the Covid-19 pandemic.
I was a little dreamy and was about to be served the default(?) soup version when I told uncle that I wanted a "dry" one. Uncle
This is the $7 serving that comes with meat, tripe and tendon smothered
in a thick gooey tacky brown sauce. There's a $8 serving that comes with
beef balls as well but they are generic factory made, so I opted for the
$7 (sans
beef ball) one instead.
I opted for kway teow. A quick toss enveloped each snowy white strand with a gleaming brown sheen making the soft tender rice noodles taste mildly savoury beefy sweet. There's also a bit of nuttiness from crushed toasted peanuts.
Besides the sauce (more about that later), my favourite thing in the bowl was the beef tendons. Silky smooth, soft tender with a subtle delicate crunch to the bite. Not much if any flavour in itself but it took on the mild savoury beefy sweet taste of the sauce clinging to it.
The tripe had a different kind of soft texture and a slight sweet taste which was complemented by the taste of the thick gooey sauce. Yeah, I love the savoury beefy sweet sauce of Kheng Fatt Hainanese Beef Noodles. It was mild tasting and would be even better for me, if it was a little more robust.
Small pieces of lean beef cooked through but still tender, juicy with a slight squeaky bite. Tasted savoury beefy with complementary flavours from the smothering sauce.
The soup was light coloured, almost clear. It tasted mildly savoury
beefy with hints of preserved vegetable and flavour of cilantro dropped
into it.
I don't usually use sauces much. This perky chili sauce is robustly savoury spicy sourish. Most people use this chili sauce as a dip and some mix this into the noodles to spice up the whole dish. To each, his own 😊
An authentic old school Hainanese beef noodle but the flavours lack depth and was on the
mild, somewhat flat side. If you are looking for a comfort dish that may grow on you,
give Kheng Fatt Hainanese Beef Noodles try.
Thinking about beef noodles with gooey sauce the few that come to mind are Din Kee in Bukit Indah in Johor Bahru, Mok Gao in Kulai, Seremban Beef Noodle, Hock Lam Beef Noodle in Singapore, Old Pasar Beef Noodle in Kluang, Yean Kee in Kluang.
