Best Johor Beef Noodles @ Mok Gao of Kulai 古来莫九牛肉面

Made it early enough to Kulai this morning for Mok Gao's famous beef kueh teow soup. (Arrived at 8:30am but their "dry" beef kueh teow was already sold out 😅 )

So, we settled for this "soup" 清湯 version which was also excellent.

The light tea coloured broth was beefy, savoury, herbal, and sweet - delicious.

Wow wow wee.... this beef was tenderly soft and tasted of rich, creamy, sweet beefiness.

Round two.

This time with bee hoon. Same beefy goodness with slight herbal notes. Same tender creamy beefy beef.

A tub of chili sauce at our table. Sourish, salty, spicy hot. Didn't need this much as I like to taste the beefy flavours neat.

Mok Gao is a no signboard eatery located in this zinc roofed house for the past 50 years. Countless people have walked down those steps to their favourite beef noodles over the decades.

Families enjoy their beef noodles along the narrow five-foot-way. I like the kampung ambiance and feel. Priceless.

Or, inside the little village house.

Alternatively, there is plenty of seats at the adjacent space that looked more like your regular restaurant. (This is a new addition - it wasn't here when I first visited in 2012.)

The cooking is done at the front of the eatery.

I was honoured to meet Uncle Mok Gao, the friendly Hainanese founder of this most famous beef noodle place in Kulai, and perhaps southern Johor. Mok Gao is Hainanese for Ah Kaw 亚九 (literally number 9). In the old days, parents often just name their children number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and so on. After 50 years, this shop still has no name - everyone just knows it as Mok Gao's shop.

Mok Gao's grandson has already mastered the art of cooking the beef.

Recommended for you 👍 An iconic must-try beef noodle for beef lovers, worth the hour long drive to Kulai from JB or Singapore. Be there by 9:00am, otherwise you will have to settle for pork or seafood 😄 Kulai folks not only love this shop. They are proud of it.

  1. We often go there. You have the exact description. We were there earlier by half an hour, so we ate the dry version. Delicious! (Pn Chong)
