YY Kafei Dian Coffee Shop • Nice Chicken Rice @ Little Hainan Singapore ☎ 6336 8813 春园咖啡店

Catching up at YY Kafei Dian, corner coffee shop at Beach Road and Purvis Street intersection.

We ordered just these. Half a chicken, a vegetable soup and coffee for each of us.

Didn't order YY Kafeidian's signature kaya toast buns because we were well past overdosed on carbs already for the day.

Born and raised in Singapore, chicken rice is chicken rice lah - we were here to catch up. (My mind wasn't on blogging 🤭)

Anyway, the heap of half chicken was chopped into large chunky pieces the way I like it. Slathered with a greasy light yellow brown sauce, garnished with parsley.

The meat was tender, not soft. Moist, not juicy. Skin was soft, smooth though not silky. The thing that struck me immediately was the natural chicky sweetness. Nice.

I mean, it is quite often these days that we get chicken with very little, hardly or no chicken taste - meat which had to rely on the dressing sauce and chili dip for flavour.

YY's chili sauce was spicy tangy savoury. Not bad though unremarkable.

Many people like chicken meat this tasteless way, but I prefer a bit of natural chicky flavour. At YY, the chicken itself was flavourful enough without help from sauces or dips. I like it.

The rice was good quality whole grains, nutty though a tad dry (not light and fluffy). I fixed it with a bit of soup. Savoury sweet flavour and aroma was good. (We were there near closing time, so the rice may have dried out a little.)

After eating, I kaypoh kaypoh (busy body) went to chat with uncle chef. His name is 王. He worked 11 years with Chin Chin and 14 with YY Kafeidian so far. I told uncle chef we enjoyed his chicken.

The vegetable soup with century egg, salted egg, and fresh egg.

The first thing I noticed was the nice umami taste of dried anchovies in the clear soup, in spite of the presence of robust flavours from the century egg and salted egg.

The green vegetables were done till soft. I like this soup.

We paid low SG30+ for all these with hot drinks.

Blogging wasn't on my mind - so I didn't take my usual photos of the restaurant, the interior, nor the facade. I even abstained from the signature butter kaya bun 🤣

But, I like the chicken so much, I can't wait to share it with you. (I shall be away next week.)

I shall be back for the unfinished business at YY Kafeidian soon and update this blog. Watch this space below 👇
