Liew Fishball📍Tun Aminah JB • Traditional Minimalist Chic Cuisine 劉记鱼丸面 ☎ +6017 744 3770

I was in Taman Ugku Tun Aminah for an errand. Looked for breakfast and saw this new fish ball noodle shop at Jalan Pahlawan 2. Liew Fish Ball Noodle is a nice comfortable place and their food, though seemingly simple, is tasty.

Simple shop front with quite eye catching signboard.

The interior was quite typical of JB noodle shops nowadays. Clean, bright, simply furnished and decorated, and air conditioned.

The focus was more on the food served, less on aesthetics for social media.

In the menu, there's fishball with various side dishes and types of noodles. At Liew Fishball it was Hakka yong Tau foo type of sides filled with fish paste.

I just chose the "dry version" of handcut noodles and fishballs with soup.

The dish delivered looked anaemic, plain Jane with light, dull, flat colours.

Truth be told, the looks reduced my expectations and enthusiasm a little.

But, it actually tasted better than it looked.

The soy sauce and lard oil with a sprinkle of fried garlic lent their aroma and savoury sweet flavours to the spongy tender fat hand cut noodles.

But, the intensity was on the mild side and may not appeal to those who prefer strong flavours.

It's the fish balls that got me.

Not very big. Relatively firm but yields a light soft spring and tender chewiness to the bite.

The fishball tasted gently savoury salty with a subtle fresh fish flavour. The fishballs were hand made with yellowtail fish.

The soup was savoury with fish taste and a little pepperiness. The sprinkle of fried shallot and fresh chopped scallion added their flavours and aroma.

I liked it so much that I ordered a separate (second) bowl of fishball soup.

来都来了 Since already here, why not enjoy more 🤭 Texture so que, taste so delicious, yeah why not?

Johor Bahru is a fishball paradise. Every time I am here, I got to allocate some precious stomach space for handmade fishball. Places like Liew Fishball make sure I don't waste stomach space and calories.

  1. I agreed. Singaporeans take hand-made fishballs like holy grail. But it is so common in JB... And JB fishballs are so much better than Singapore Song Kee and Thye Hong.

The high costs in Singapore has led to local hawkers cutting back on ingredients to shore up margins. In the past, every fishball noodle stall u patronised served fishballs with lotsa fish. Today, nobody can afford to do so becos of high costs.
