Tun Aminah Mee Hoon Kueh by QQ Mee 皇后面粉粿 ☏ +6016 765 2582

Running an errand at Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, I stumbled upon 皇后面粉棵 Tun Aminah Mee Hoon Kueh shop at Jalan Nakhoda 7.

Stepping inside, it was a small cheery place with an orange colour theme. Simply but comfortably furnished, very clean, bright and air conditioned.

They also have an al fresco section outside which is quite comfortable in the morning.

I ordered their signature bowl.

As the pork ball in the picture looked factory made, I asked if I could change them for fishballs, instead.

Can. No problem 🙏

So here it is. Squares of rolled wheat dough in a murky soup with fishballs, minced pork, sayur manis, and ear fungus.

Fried anchovies (thoughtfully) at the side with optional chili sauce and cut chili.

Generous serving for RM13 something.

I stirred in the crispy fried anchovies before eating.

The murky soup tasted mainly savoury salty with a bit of underlying porcine flavours.

Personally, I prefer clearer 清清 cheng cheng type of soup.

The kueh looked hand torn and quite thick - good things I look for in mee hoon kueh.

The bite was tender springy, smooth. I personally wish it was slightly firmer and more chewy.

Sayur manis, a definitive ingredient of mee hoon kueh. If it doesn't have mani cai, it is not mee hoon kueh. Cai sim don't cut it, sorry 😬

Sayur manis is a fibrous leaf with a slight sweetish green taste.

So yeah, this is a real mee hoon kueh dish.

Got four hand made fishballs. The texture was nicely soft spongy chewy, flavour was mainly mildly savoury salty with a hint of fish sweetness.

I like the light crunch these ear fungus added to the dish.

On the table were there two bottles of fried garlic and shallot in oil.

Win already lor, the fried shallot standard like that.... .

The fried garlic was rich with flavour too.

A blissful mouthful with a little dab of savoury spicy sambal balacan.

Works well too with a piece of cut chili.

Comfort in a delicious bowl. Worth a try.

Besides the signature soup mee hoon kueh, they also have the dry version (including mala flavour), lor mee, and side dishes like ngoh hiang.

(Afternote: Thanks to kaki kaki Stanley's comment, I realised that 皇后面粉粿 don't serve any lard oil or lard croutons which might make it more tasty for me 🤔 )

  1. I must say, this is not something I ever order unless the whole point of the visit is this dish. It’s nice, but the whole point seems to be the crunchy ikan bilis and the other - also crunchy - toppings like fried lard and other aromatics. So I was pleasantly surprised to come across a dry version at Ah Lim Jalan Tua Kong, Joo Chiat Place. Ahh - finally a robust lard based sauce with a slightly sweet black vinegar and a great chili sauce that coats the qq / slightly chewy mee hoon kueh. now when i order aglio olio, i sometimes ask for balsamic vinegar. i guess my philosophy in life is - if the dish is healthy, i lose an element of naughtiness that just makes meal times more enjoyable.

  2. Hi Tony Boey
They've opened an outlet nearer to JB town - it's beside Taste Of Chao, across the exit of Holiday Plaza leading towards Taman Kebun Teh and Melodies Garden. Very tasty indeed.
