Beo Crescent Tu Tu Kueh • Kia Xiang Du Du Nyonya Kueh 佳香嘟嘟娘惹糕 ☎️ 9838 8194

Exploring Beo Crescent Market & Food Centre, we stumbled upon Kia Xiang Du Du Nyonya Kueh 佳香嘟嘟娘惹糕 stall which has tu tu kueh.

Tu tu kueh or little steamed rice cakes is one of my favourite local snacks - I let visiting overseas guests try them whenever possible.

There are only a handful of tu tu kueh stalls left in Singapore and it is one of Singapore's disappearing artisanal food crafts.

Mr Tan is one of the Tan family which has stalls at Havelock and Jurong West hawker centres. Tan has been making and selling tu tu kueh since he ROD-ed (run out date or completed full time national service) in 1982.

The Tan family still use this 70 year old contraption (located at Havelock food centre) to mill rice to make powdered rice for tu tu kueh.

The kueh made with rice flour and fillings are shaped with this unique flower mould. (One of the features that sets it apart from its close cousin, the putu piring.)

The kueh covered with a square of cloth is transferred to a steaming pot. The Tan clan stalls all use the same design steamer since the first generation. (The tu tu kueh steamer is also different in design from a putu piring steamer.)

Kueh prices remained the same since 2025.

There were only two flavours - crushed peanut and shredded coconut pulp with red jaggery sugar.

We bought a bag of five of mixed flavours. The kueh were steam cooked and served on squares of fragrant pandan leaf.

I like the texture of Kia Xiang Du Du's tu tu kueh - it was relatively firmer and denser compared to the stall at Havelock Road (also from the Tan clan).

The snowy white kueh itself was subtly sweet with more intense sweetness from shredded coconut and red sugar.

The peanut filling was nutty and sweet.

Personally, I prefer the shredded coconut filling.

We also had the big size S$1 tu tu kueh. No difference in taste from the standard size tu tu kueh.

Digital art gif. A hand holding a giant rubber stamp slams it down on a white background. The stamp simple says, "Approved" in red letters.

I will have tu tu kueh whenever I see a TTK stall - they are delicious and unique to our region. Perfect with coffee or tea. Hopefully, this disappearing heritage snack will be with us for many more years to come.
