✍ 5 Dec 2024. Combing the streets of Taman Ungku Tun Aminah / Skudai, I suddenly felt a little famished. Then, I stumbled upon a familiar name, Sin Hai Cheng Duck at Jalan Hang Tuah 40 in Taman Skudai Baru.
Yes, I hunt for food the most primitive, inefficient way by pounding the pavement myself because I still want the joy of unexpected discoveries on my own. (It's living dangerously because often, it is a waste of time, energy, money and calories 😂 but today is my lucky day in many ways 🕺 )
I've enjoyed Sin Hai Cheng Duck in Sri Skudai since 2012 but didn't know they have an outlet here in Taman Skudai Baru until stumbling upon it now.
Boss WJ is the elder brother of LS who runs the main outlet at Sri Skudai. WJ's outlet has been here for 8 years and was in Taman Mount Austin for 3 years before moving here.
Seeing they have pork belly here, I opted for it as I have eaten and written about SHC's duck many times already. I added duck tongue as I like it.
Didn't order much as I have another major makan (eating) appointment next.
Turned out I enjoyed this stewed pork belly with rice and a bit of their signature tangy spicy savoury chili sauce. The savoury flavour was at the mild intensity I like and the skin, meat & fat were soft tender but not mushy.
The preserved mustard came after I had finished my rice. I thought they had forgotten my order but I didn't feel the need to remind them as I was quite satiated with the pork belly and rice already.
Anyway, I was able to eat up the preserved mustard as the flavour wasn't too intense even without rice.
The soft vegetable was tangy savoury and laced with a bit of lard. Nice.
After eating everything, I decided to try their famous Teochew braised duck as well (because I want to share my review of this place 😂 ).
I always like Sin Hai Cheng for how thinly they slice their duck. Cutting them thin like this makes me feel they are "snacks" and I tend to eat more 😂
In big chunks, they will feel like too meaty and I will subconsciously hold back.
The thin slices of duck breast were tender. Bathed in soy sauce based savoury braising stock the meat infused its savoury salty spice flavours. But it was not overly robust, so some of the duck's natural sweetness was still discernible 👌
If you want to eat braised duck at Sin Hai Cheng, this Jalan Hang Tuah outlet is an option you can consider.
So much food for RM25.

✍ 1 Apr 2012 (@ main outlet in Sri Skudai). Today, I went to try out Sin Hai Cheng 新海珍, another of the famous four big braised duck shops in JB’s “duck central” in Taman Sri Skudai.
Sin Hai Cheng has built up its own following of fans. Even at when I was there, the restaurant was still doing a brisk business with a steady stream of customers.
The taste of braised duck has a lot to do with the skill in cutting the meat. This gentleman may be young but he has already mastered the art of cutting the duck so that its best flavours are presented.
The nicely sliced duck meat was tender and tasted smoky and naturally sweet. Even after dipping in the light braising sauce it was not too salty.
The thin gizzard slices were slightly firm yet still tender. It tasted slightly salty and naturally sweet.
The kway teow doused with braising sauce was generously topped with fresh spring unions and fried shallots. When stirring the kway teow, waffs of shallot oil fragrance raised to the nose – hmm… nice.
My meal of duck and gizzard with a kway teow and soup came to RM7. Definitely an excellent meal at a reasonable price.

I remembered reading there’s a branch in Austin. Didn’t know they moved and chose to operate at Skudai area still 😬 - a bit far for me to venture to the other end lah 😝 Will try this outlet next time 😊
