Ah Hua at Sekee coffee shop at Jalan Segget is an old name in JB's Teochew kway teow soup. I haven't been back for a few years as food hunting has taken me away in search of Johor's other hidden gems. Ah Hua kway teow hasn't changed a bit - the owners have kept it true to tradition.
Located in the quaint and charming JB old downtown, Ah Hua at Jalan Segget is the only kway teow soup place I know that still cooks it's bone broth with a charcoal stove. The orange flames caress the pot of soup and gently tease out the bones' essence.
It was a sunny, busy Sunday morning. The old 1960s vintage coffee shop was packed and some customers have to wait for their seats. Ah Hua has many regulars, a loyal multi-generational following for their old style kway teow soup.
Everyone is happy because we can see that every bowl is lovingly cooked one by one. No mass cooking. No pre-cooking. Everything is fresh and cooked from scratch. We waited about 30 minutes for our kway teow.
Doesn't that look so beautiful? There is so much pride in delivering that bowl of kway teow soup.
The ingredients neatly laid in the bowl then filled with soup. The steam rising as it was delivered to our table.
The slice of kidney was perfectly done. Clean tasting. Soft, with a jelly like bounce to the bite.
The liver slice was soft and smooth with a slight grainy feel to the bite.
Clear socket bone broth with subtle porcine flavours extracted by hours of boiling.
My kway teow has a big splash of bright crimson chili sauce over the ivory flat rice noodles dressed with a tossing sauce which is a blend of light soy sauce, lard and vinegar. There was a scattering of crispy fried shallot and lard crackling.
The flat rice noodles painted red by the chili sauce are smooth, soft and have a real rice flavour.
Yet another heartwarming, satisfying and delicious breakfast at Ah Hua kway teow at Sekee coffee shop.
Grateful to boss Lily for keeping the fire of tradition burning.
->> There is nothing fanciful here at Ah Hua. No gimmicks. Just darned good, good ol' Teochew kway teow soup. And, in that way delights me always.
