My JB buddy Jeff has been feeding me a lot of tips about where to find good eats in Johor Bahru. He told me that I should check out Chef Ong's restaurant in Permas Jaya which specialises in salmon dishes.

So here we are at Chef Ong Salmon Fish Head Soup and Sashimi at Jalan Permas 10/5. (Note that Chef Ong is moving right across the road to another shop lot on 2 Jun 2016).

Our order for two of us - salmon fish head bee hoon 三文鱼米粉汤 (RM8.90), salmon fish slices been hoon 三文鱼肉米粉汤 (RM11.90) and fish dumplings 三文鱼水饺 (RM15).

There were four quite large pinkish salmon slices, generic factory fish balls and bee hoon in a cloudy broth.

The pieces of fish were tender with the characteristic flavour of fresh salmon. Fans of salmon will like this.

The medium bodied broth was savoury sweet with layers of flavour from pork bones, chicken, fish bones and anchovy. The fried diced garlic added aroma and another savoury layer to the soup. We like this flavoursome broth a lot.

The salmon fish head bee hoon soup comes with three large pieces of bony fried fish head and generic factory fish balls.

The fried fish head pieces were meaty, still juicy inside while the outside had a slight crisp. The bones were fried to tenderness.

Personally, I like this fried fish head more then the sliced fish one, earlier. The fried fish head is tasty, the broth is the same flavoursome soup and the frying actually masked the characteristic salmon flavour making this even better for me :-D (I know salmon fish fans love that characteristic flavour.)

My first time having salmon fish dumplings.

Nice meaty fish dumplings with flavour from the minced salmon and juicy crunch from bits of water chestnuts. Salmon lovers will love these dumplings in Chef Ong's tasty broth.

->> Salmon fish lovers will be interested to check out Chef Ong's restaurant which serves salmon fish with traditional Chinese noodle soup as well as in sashimi form. The broth and fried fish head are the big winners for me. I shall be back as there are also a few other dishes like Chef Ong's famous Penang prawn mee 梹城福建蝦面 which I want to try.
