Greenet Bar and Restaurant at Taman Pelangi in Johor Bahru CLOSED

Greenet-Bar-Restaurant

Greenet Bar and Restaurant is one of the newest Western restaurants to open in Johor Bahru. I was invited to visit Greenet by Ben Low, it's Business Development Director.

Greenet is located along Jalan Maju, Johor Bahru's famous 报纸"newspaper street" where several newspapers have their JB branch offices. It's at one of the converted residences registered for business use (just beyond the older shop lots). Parking is easy, street side or inside Greenet itself.

Greenet is on the roof level of the converted terrace house, inside an unique all glass enclosure. We walked up a stairway to get to Greenet.

Inside, Greenet is very bright during the day. It was cool and comfortable inside with air conditioning.

The green and leafy décor reminded me of those garden cafés, perfect for a lazy weekend brunch. Greenet's theme as it's name suggests is environment friendliness in their operations and use of natural ingredients in their food.

Chef Eddie Soh, Greenet's Culinary Director trained in the United Kingdom and worked in the Savoy London before returning to Johor Bahru. Eddie is involved with a few restaurants in JB, including Taste Bug's, a Western casual diner with outlets at Sutera Mall, Permas Jaya and Bukit Indah.

Greenet aims to be couples' choice for romantic dining. Each couple is given a lock where they can write their messages and lock it to the stairway railing leading to the restaurant as a symbol of their everlasting commitment. The love locks was inspired by the Pont Des Art bridge on the Seine in Paris, the romantic capital of the world.

Fruit Juice RM13

Stepping in from the hot midday sun, we cooled down with a couple of icy blended fresh fruit juices.

Our lunch followed soon afterwards, with the creamy Truffle Mushroom Soup made with real mushrooms and drizzled with truffle oil.

Truffle Mushroom Soup RM18

Thick and creamy like a savoury and slightly sweet gruel with interesting bits of finely diced spongy mushrooms.

Squid Ink Pasta RM36

I requested for Squid Ink Pasta as it is my favourite way of eating pasta now :D

The pasta came with generous loads of ingredients like clams, scallops, shrimps and squid rings laid on top of the noodles. The seafood ingredients were cooked in the usual tangy and sweet spaghetti sauce while the pasta were tossed in squid ink.

Ben told me that most customers prefer the squid ink pasta to have seafood with conventional tangy sweet spaghetti sauce. Personally, I prefer to savour the unique taste and flavour of squid ink just by itself :D

The pasta was nicely done and a little on the softer side as this is the local preference. Personally, I like my pasta a little stiffer, the Italian way :D

Veal Rack with Brandy Flambé RM128

The brandy flambé was barely visible under the bright midday sun. I am sure the orange and blue flame would be quite dramatic during dinner time :D

The thick, tender, beefy and juicy marbled beef was done medium well (70%). The meat was creamy, smokey and savoury - I love it.

Bailey's Misu RM18

We had a large chilled tiramisu for dessert, one of my favourites. Spongy, not overly sweet, nice coffee aroma with a slight liquor kick.

Espresso RM6

Our bitter espresso to go with the sweet tiramisu.

Greenet Bar and Restaurant is an interesting new place to check out in Johor Bahru.

It's an attractive option for Valentine's Day dinner coming up soon :D

Idea: check out Greenet for one of it's value-for-money set lunches and see if you would like to bring your date here for Valentine's Day dinner :D

  1. Jalan Maju is not under Taman Pelangi, it's under Taman Maju Jaya. I used to live there some 20 years ago.

    1. I thought so too, but the restaurant's website, name cards and their published materials all indicate Taman Pelangi. Let me double check with them. Thanks Cecilia.

  2. Is this a Halal restaurant?

  3. i think it is a converetd bungalow, not a terrace house. Pricey stuff, but what's good isn't usually cheap.
