Joining the locals at Redhill Market food centre to queue for Hua Kee's famous chicken rice on a Sunday morning.

Our plate of half a poached chicken. Very reasonably priced at SGD14 with two plates of rice with complimentary soup and sauces.

The chicken chopped in large chunks was cooked slightly pink. I like chicken in large chunks as it keeps the natural juices and flavours in the meat.

The chicken was tender, juicy and had a nice chicken flavour. The savoury sweet flavour from the watery dressing sauce was very slight. I like it that the "chickeny" flavour at Hua Kee is distinct.

The tender meat had a gentle chewy bite. I like Hua Kee's chunky chicken with skin and bone in.

The rice had very mild chicken aroma, fluffy, the grains separate easily and was not overly greasy.

Spicy sour chili sauce and savoury sweet dark soy sauce. No ginger dip.

The most nicely sliced cucumbers that I've seen at any chicken rice stall or restaurant. Very tasty as the savoury sweet dressing sauce clung to the sides of the crunchy slices of refreshing cucumber.

The pesky uninvited blogger hung around after eating and managed to persuade the busy stall holders to pause a moment for a picture ;-p

Mr Lim the second generation owner with his mum Mdm Tan who together with her husband founded Hua Kee over 30 years ago.

The queue was still long after we finished eating. Regulars here said the chicken will sell out at 1:00 pm and drumsticks around 11:00 am.

Redhill Market is just a short 3-minute walk from Redhill MRT station. Convenient parking around the market and food centre is plentiful in the nearby HDB carparks.

  1. the chicken looks so good. I wonder if they dunk the chicken into cold water to prevent the meat from cooking further when it is taken out.

  2. I sincerely appreciated my customers for queening up so long for the chicken rice. I hope that your appreciated this chicken simple plate of chicken rice. It may look simple but its the efforts we put in for this simpke dish. From chicken to rice, even the cucumber that most peoples dislike. This chicken has been around for nearly 40yrs but not all people knows about it. We are HUA KEE CHICKEN RICE. Using old traditional style of cooking the rice that the new generation of kids and teens have hardly seen.

  6. Seems like new people are running the stall for the past year. Does anyone know if the auntie and son sold their business?

  7. Once mum retired, son quickly sold the biz to new owners. New owners in turn trying to be too smart and modified the rice recipe, causing the the once popular Hua Kee Chicken Rice Stall to close permanently.
