Went for lunch at the famous Fei Fei Crab in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur.
This is the founding shop - well, not exactly - the very first Fei Fei Crab was a street side tai chao (zhi char) stall in the same area.
Owner chef 南君 started Fei Fei Crab with RM50,000 at age 20. With ingenuity and hard work, enterprising 南君 grew Fei Fei Crab to 7 branches around KL, JB and soon in Penang and overseas.
南君 said it was a struggle in the beginning. With perseverance, Fei Fei Crab's big break came when their interpretation of the Malaysian classic kum heong (金香 in Cantonese) flavour crab caught on. After that everything is "kum 金" or gold 😄
Created decades ago by an unknown culinary genius in Malaysia, every self respecting tai chao (zhi char) shop in Malaysia will have their secret recipe kum heong 金香 crab in their menu.
南君 struck gold with his kum heong blend which is a robust tasting creamy sauce with well balanced savoury and sweet flavours with mild spicy notes.
南君's kum heong sauce works wonderfully with Fei Fei's sweet tasting fried buns.
The creamy sauce is tasty, yet it leaves room for us to appreciate the natural clean tasting briny sweetness of the live Indonesian crabs.
Fast forward ten years to 2017, at Fei Fei Crab their signature kum heong crab now only ranks #2 in popularity behind "salted egg yolk" crab. 南君 keeps on innovating and he also has "Mao Shan Wang durian crab", "cheese" crab etc on the menu. I am curious to try his Mao Shan Wang durian crab.
We also had 泰式酸酐三鮮 or Tri Seafood with Thai Style Sour Spicy Sauce.
It's fresh la la clams, squid and prawns steamed, and served in a robust sour sweet and spicy Thai inspired sauce. I like this dish as I love the well balanced sauce and the fresh seafood. A main dish in itself, it was like a large appetiser as the more I ate this, the more hungry I became 😄
I often said that long dishes are the hardest to photograph - well, this dish is known as 万里长骨, the Ten Thousand Mile Rib 😂
It's a prime pork rib marinated in a robust savoury sweet sauce and grilled.
Tender juicy sweet meat under the dark savoury sweet layer outside.
👉 I love Fei Fei Crab's signature kam heong crab 😋 I want to come back and try their other crab flavours like Mao Shan Wang - what is that? 😄
Disclosure: Thank you 南君 for your hospitality.
