Met up with buddy Patrick and Lisa at the newly opened Eagle Wings Loft Cafe at King Albert Park in Bukit Timah, Singapore.
The old (demolished) King Albert Park, of course, is in the place memories of many Singaporeans with it's McDonald's and Cold Storage. Today, the spanking new building looked nothing like the old one and the persona of the place hasn't formed yet as tenants are just beginning to move in.
Eagle Wing Loft Cafe is one of the first to open for business in the new incarnation of King Albert Park.
Eagle Wings Loft Cafe has a distinctive nautical theme. But, this is Bukit Timah, far from the marina or the sea.... . You see... , the owners of Eagle Wings Loft Cafe are also the folks behind Eagle Wings Yacht Charters at Sentosa Cove, hence the maritime connection.
The cosy intimate cafe is a long narrow space with blue tinted lighting. The boat shaped bar and counter is on one side with simple but comfortable furnishings along the side wall. It really felt like we were aboard a luxury boat.
That catamaran in the mural is one of the assets of Eagle Wings Yacht Charters. Don't you feel like your are on a beach holiday already 🏄🏊
A quick browse through the menu - the drinks and Italian inspired dishes all have a maritime twist - sea lovers will feel very much at home at Eagle Wings.
We started with this Pamelo Salad. I was delighted by the refreshing zesty taste of the pamelo pulp which was well complemented by the spritely sweet chili and lime dressing. The leafy greens were crisp and juicy. The crushed peanuts added nutty texture and flavour to the appetising salad.
Our first mains was the signature Truffled Blackbeard. Inspired by some infamous bearded pirate, I presume.
The aroma from the truffle flavoured oil in the mushroom and bacon cream sauce was quite alluring - truffle always works for me, even knowing full well that it is synthetic. The soft al dente squid ink spaghetti were enveloped by the creamy sauce's sweet savouriness. The crushed walnut topping and grilled prawns added nutty texture and crustacean flavour to the dish.
I like this Lobster Risotto. The lobster meat and scallops were cubed and sauteed in a robust sweet savoury lobster broth. I can still taste the distinctive sweetness and crustacean flavour of the springy tender lobster meat. The overall flavours were nice and well balanced. The rice was done soft al dente, leaning on the soft side. Next time, I shall request for the rice to be done a little stiffer.
The Four Cheese Pizza has an interesting topping of Scamorza, Gorgonzola (blue) cheese, Teleggio, and Parmigiano-Reggiano, all Italian cheese melled together on a lightly browned (relatively) thin crust.
Best eaten hot as the grease from the cheese tends to soften the crust a little if left to cool too long. The cheese also tasted a little flat - the 4 cheese didn't come out in different layers on the palate.
Smokin' Sambal.
It's panne pasta tossed in sambal chili with caramelised onion and capsicum. Served with slices of smoked duck and leafy greens. We were warned - the menu described it as "fiery sambal sauce". The spicy sting wasn't that sharp but the salty taste of fermented shrimps was rather pronounced. The strong flavour of the sambal masked the delicate flavour of the smoked duck.
I like Eagle Wings' fried chicken wings. The light thin batter was crisp and just mildly savoury. The meat inside was juicy and tender, and it has a nice natural chicky sweetness.
Must get these wings when you are at Eagle Wings' Loft Cafe.
Served with a small cup of Thai inspired salty sweet spicy sauce.
Coral Rush - sparkling raspberry lemonade served with sweet cotton candy. The cotton candy was eye candy - the sweet fluff crumbled and dissolved instantly when the lemonade was poured through it into the mug. Spritely sweet sourish and refreshing. The perfect beach drink.
Floating Island - Yuzu soda with lemon sorbet. Another pleasant zesty drink.
The house blended coffee at Eagle Wings Loft has a smooth medium body and a mild nutty flavour. It is a likable cuppa. I would be glad to drop by to chill here with this nice $5 coffee in a cosy, laid back Calypso ambiance, if I am around the area.
👉 Eagle Wings Loft is a fun place to chill - the location is convenient (steps away from King Albert Park MRT station in Bukit Timah), the new hangout has a cool maritime theme, the extensive menu has food and drinks to appeal to most folks, especially the youthful set. Prices are competitive for the same type of cafe.
Thank you Lisa for your hospitality.
