I like the traditional Teochew kuih from this street side stall at Meldrum Walk in Johor Bahru. It is also popular with JB locals.
The stall doesn't make many types of kuih. There's glutinous rice kuih, yam kuih, mung kuang kuih, chive kuih, ang ku kuih (with red bean paste and green bean paste filling).
For me, as long as a kuih stall has good chive and mung kuang (turnip) kuih, I am happy already 😄
The stall also sells house made bak chang (meat dumplings). This picture was from 2012 when I just started Johor Kaki blog.
The back lane stall hasn't changed much since then.
They will lightly pan fry your kuih on request.
The stall offers no seats, so all had to takeaway. I ate this chive kuih while walking around Meldrum Walk.
The skin was thick but it was baby soft as it was mostly (if not wholly) made of rice flour. The skin was subtly sweet with a layer of mild savouriness from the browned sear and grease outside. The soft fried chives were savoury sweet with the characteristic chive flavour and aroma which I love.
Brought home my favourite kuihs without frying. Thick soft sweetish skin packed with flavoursome tender fillings.
The bak chang here is good (if, you are also like me who love more fats in their rice dumpling). Soft and moist with big chunks of tender juicy savoury sweet stewed pork inside.
