Mee rebus is one of my favourite hawker dishes - they're everywhere in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, just the right size for a snack or light meal, and delicious. Thing is, good mee rebus are harder to come by these days. I am so happy to stumble upon Auntie Lily's tasty mee rebus. You must try it too when you are near Taman Daya in Johor Bahru.

Freshly Made Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fun (Rice Rolls). Marsiling Mall Hawker Centre Singapore 港式猪肠粉现做现卖

This has happened before. I was enjoying my lunch at a hawker centre (this time at Marsiling Mall) and buddy popped up offering something else to share (this time chee cheong fun). I took a piece, partly out of curiosity, partly out of appreciation. Boomz, I liked this chee cheong fun so much that we ordered another set.

Nanyang Culture and Heritage Food in Singapore Chinatown. Five Foot Way Festival (23 & 24 Mar 2019)

Nanyang Culture and Heritage Food in Singapore Chinatown. Five Foot Way Festival

For 200 years, Singapore's Chinatown has been the focal point of Chinese coming to Nanyang 南洋 (Southeast Asia) - the first Chinese junk arrived at Singapore River in 1821. Each successive wave of 新客 new arrivals brought another layer of culture and customs to Chinatown. Food is an edible heritage we can see, smell, touch and taste - and, memories of it lodge in our taste buds and minds.

Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre. 10 Favourite Hawker Stalls, 10 Interesting Things about Bedok You May Not Know

Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre (BIHC) is one of the largest in Singapore - it has 70 hawker stalls and 1,000 seats. BIHC opened in 2014 under the Remaking Our Homeland programme, replacing the smaller old hawker centre built in 1979. BIHC is at the heart of Bedok, the largest public housing estate in Singapore with a population of around 300,000.

Pin Xiang Hainanese Chicken Rice 品香雞飯 @ Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre Singapore

For the past weeks when I was exploring Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre, I noticed that there was always a long queue at Pin Xiang Chicken Rice 品香雞飯. I only tried it today (finally), as Pin Xiang is famous for their fried chicken but I am a poached chicken devotee. I must say, thanks to Pin Xiang, I am a fried chicken convert now.

Hock Hai (Hong Lim) Curry Chicken Noodle @ Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre 福海(芳林) 咖喱鸡米粉面

I love the curry chicken noodle stalls at Hong Lim hawker centre, so when I saw Hock Hai (Hong Lim) Curry Chicken Noodle stall at Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre, I was curious and eager to check it out. Turns out, it was pretty good too.

Yong Hwa Delights Handmade Fishball Meat Ball Noodle. Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre

When I passed by this stall at Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre, the thing that hit me first was the bold sign "Handmade Fishball Meat Ball Noodle 手工鱼圆肉圆面". Only on closer look did I see Yong Hwa Delights 永华, the actual name of the stall.

If you know me, right... . You will know that I am not really a big fan of franchise stalls. So, my eyes and mind unconsciously blanked out Bedok Chwee Kueh 勿洛水粿 even though I passed the stall many times at Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre. (Bedok Chwee Kueh is a franchise with many outlets throughout Singapore.)

Hai Fa Kway Chap in Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre Singapore 海发粿汁

Hai Fa Kway Chap in Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre Singapore 海发粿汁

For the past weeks, I had been lurking around the sprawling Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre. I think the hawkers have alerted the neighbourhood watch about this inquisitive uncle... . Anyway, as usual I turned to my Facebook friends for help on where to eat. Brent Tay said I must try Hai Fa 海发粿汁 - "The best kway chap" he said. "To me the best in Singapore" he further stressed.

Gao Lak Roasted Chestnuts in Singapore Chinatown Trengganu Food Street

Gao Lak Roasted Chestnuts in Singapore Chinatown Trengganu Food Street

In old Singapore, pasar malam and wayang (stage opera) shows were fairly common in town and in the heartlands. Where there were pasar malam and wayang, there were gao lak or roasted chestnut stalls. It was a popular portable snack. Nowadays, gao lak 栗子 stalls are rare in Singapore. One of the last ones left is at the Chinatown Trengganu Street food stalls.

Chendol or cendol is one of the most popular and iconic of Southeast Asian ice desserts. It's a godsend on humid hot days in tropical Asia. But, authentic cendol is hard to find nowadays - in Singapore, you can perhaps count them all with the fingers on one hand (and 3 of them are Old Amoy Chendol 😂 ).

I passed this way at the food kiosks at Trengganu Street in Singapore's Chinatown many times. But, only now did I start to realise that there are some little gems here.

Sugar Painting & Life in Luocheng Ancient City in Leshan, Sichuan 罗城古镇糖画

We dropped by briefly at Luocheng Ancient City 罗城古镇 on our way from Jiayang steam train station to Emeishan City in Leshan, Sichuan. Luocheng city is a late Ming era town built in 1628. Coming here was like walking unsuspectingly into a time machine - a 400 year time warp.

Emei Shan Mountain & Golden Buddha - Sichuan's Sacred Buddhist Mountain in Winter 峨眉山

Mount Emei Shan & Golden Buddha - Sichuan's Sacred Mountain in Winter 峨眉山

Many of us would have heard of Emei Shan 峨眉山 because it is the home of the legendary Emei branch of Chinese martial arts 峨眉武术. Mount Emei is also one of China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains. Visiting Mount Emei during my 6 day Sichuan tour, I realised that it is also one of the most scenic places in the world. It was one of the most memorable highlights of the tour.

Sanxingdui

You know right.... like me, you might have also seen such ancient Chinese bronze masks with angular facial features and bulging eyes. My first impression was they weren't very Chinese looking but I never gave any it any further thought.
