Ramadan Bazaar Buffet at Thistle Johor Bahru 6 June - 4 July 2016 JK1509
Doubletree By Hilton Hotel Johor Bahru Ramadhan Buffet JK1168
Johor Kaki was invited to visit the Ramadhan buffet at Doubletree By Hilton Hotel Johor Bahru. As expected, the buffet spread was extensive with many varieties of traditional and international dishes but I just indulged myself with my usual favourites.

I was invited to a media preview of Thistle Hotel's annual Ramadan buffet.
This year's event is known as Kampung Kita Ramadan Buffet featuring traditional Malay dishes, the kind that nenek (grandmother) lovingly fussed over during the Holy Month.
On the menu are traditional dishes like Ayam Masak Kurma, Daging Masak Hitam, Asam Pedas Ikan Pari, Ayam Masak Merah, Ayam Masak Madu, Daging Dendeng, Patin Masak Chili and lots more.
I am not going to pretend that I know the name of every dish in the too extensive buffet spread. So, I'll just let the food speak for themselves :-D

Patin Masak Chili.

Fried chicken with tofu, broccoli and carrots in Superior sauce.

Ikan Tengerri in spicy gravy.

Daging Dendeng.

Ayam Masak Kurma.

Fried prawns in cereal batter.
There will also be the ever popular Roasted Whole Lamb (kambing golek) and live stations serving satay, keropok lekor, sup tulang and soto.

Remember to bring your dessert stomach when you come for Thistle's Ramadan buffet. There are over 20 types of traditional Malay kuih and also Western style cakes and puddings to wrap up the feasting on a sweet note.

Remember to try Thistle's signature fried durian fritter, otherwise you will regret and everyone is too busy eating to feel sorry for you ;-p
More kuih and cakes to feast..... your eyes... burp.

The pulut durian doesn't look appetising at first sight but once you start, you may not be able to stop. So, stay away if you are on a diet :-D
Joking..... this pulut durian is really good! Worth your calories.

Ah... such delicate works of edible art.

Thank you Chef Mahmud (left) and team for the sumptuous and scrumptious Ramadan buffet (preview).

5-Star Thistle Hotel is located in an exclusive neighbourhood just 10 minutes' drive from downtown JB or JB CIQ.

Room with a view.

Lim kopi (drink coffee) in my room and enjoying the panoramic view of Dataran Merdeka JB and Straits of Johor.
Acknowledgement: My thanks to Thistle Hotel Johor Bahru for your hospitality. As this is an invited tasting, the food is not reviewed.

Ramadan Buffet 2014 at Thistle Johor Bahru Hotel

Johor Kaki was invited to try out the Ramadan buffet at Thistle Hotel.
The numerous food stalls were set up under a tall canopy in the airy grand court yard at the Lower Ground level. I feel I was exploring a Ramadan bazaar in the garden.

Guests take their food from the stalls and enjoy their dinner in the spacious adjacent Grand Ball Room.

The guests were entertained with traditional Samrah performance while enjoying the sumptuous buffet spread.

Thistle's Ramadan buffet is the brainchild of Executive Chef Imran. 22 years of culinary experience under his belt including a stint in the UK with Jom Malaysia (UK), Imran credits his mum for his achievements. Imran said that he was inspired by mum's cooking at his hometown in Kulim, Kedah.
Let's take a look at the colours and flavours at Thistle Hotel's Ramadan feast.

The ever popular grilled lamb (kambing pangang) station.

I love to tease out the bits of aromatic and flavourful lamb from between the bones :D

Grilled fish (ikan bakar) station.

This heap of freshly grilled spicy fish will be gone in moments :D

The chef frying fresh prawns filling the air with pungent spicy aroma.

There were many more dishes on offer - this was squid cooked with salted egg yolk and spices.

Sauteed beef with onions. Ostrich was also available.

With so much meat to choose from, I love to have some fresh vegetables for balance.

I love the kambing soup, especially the tendon and cartilage at this stall. Went two rounds here :D

Dodol, a traditional hot sweet dessert is made everyday.

Eat durians, durian puffs and fried durian fritters to your heart's content.

Besides traditional kuih kuih, Thistle also serves Western cakes and desserts from the bakery of pastry chef Ibrahim.

The old school drinks stall.

I lost count of the number of rounds I went, including desserts and durian :P This was the first round :D

Round two. Got some sushi from the Japanese stall.
I stop here. You've got the idea :D

Ramadan Buffet in Johor Bahru, Hotel Mutiara

Johor Kaki was invited to try out the Ramadan buffet at Hotel Mutiara in Taman Century, Johor Bahru.

There was far more varieties of food than I could taste in one evening. Everyone of us was spoiled for choice.
Take a tour with me of Hotel Mutiara's Ramadan buffet. This is just a very small selection of the all the traditional Malay and international food served.

There was an outdoor cooking area with a kampung ambiance.

The grilled fresh seafood station at the outdoor cooking area.

Charcoal grilled chicken.

It was fun to watch the Chef having fun with his flying roti canai.
Look out for the murtabak rusa (venison) at this station.

The station of traditional handmade Malay desserts.

The popular grilled lamb or kambing pangang station.

There was a lot of other food, this was the fried fish in creamy gravy.

Rusa (venison) cooked till tender in aromatic curry spices and coconut milk. I love this.

The key man who orchestrated the whole show and put everything together was Chef Zuraimi.

Some traditional appetisers.

The colourful drinks station.

Executive Chef Mohd Zaid showing me the fresh watermelon juice station.

This goreng pisang cheese or fried banana with chocolate and cheese topping is the rage now in Johor Bahru.

There were several types of handmade sambal to spice up our food.
Look out for sambal tempoyak made with chili and durian. This was the first time I tried this. It was sweet and spicy with subtle bitter notes along with pronounced durian flavour. May not be for everyone, but do check it out to see if you like it.

We like this char kway teow. The fried rice noodles have nice texture and was flavourful with the savoury sauce well seared in.

Love everything on my plate, especially the sambal oxtail and venison murtabak.

I am not doing justice to the sumptuous and scrumptious spread of food at the Ramadan buffet here. You have to come here to see for yourself.

The traditional hand washing station was a nice homely touch.
