Ask any Johorean to recommend a good Japanese restaurant in JB and Yaoki is bound to be mentioned among the top.
This was my first time here. Yaoki is on the second floor, so we have to climb the stairs.
I like the rustic feel inside Yaoki, the warm lighting, brown green colours, and Japanese touches like a bookcase of 漫画 manga or comics.
The sushi / sashimi bar.
They even have old school type private rooms where diners sit comfortably on the wooden floor with their feet in the pit.
Yaoki's set lunch menu - a variety of basically noodles and rice dishes. Prices ranges from RM20++ to RM30++.
We were delighted with this complimentary chawanmushi (Japanese steamed egg custard). It was hot, soft, eggy and had layers of savoury sweetness from the bits of prawn and chicken inside. It whetted our appetite for the mains to come, raising our expectations.
Shio Buta Ton Ramen (price RM25++). I picked the ramen set because as a ramen fan, I am always on the lookout for a ramen place where I can hangout in JB.
The broth has good medium body, smooth and not greasy. It tasted mainly savoury salty in layers. I like this broth.
The curly noodles were generic with soft rubber bandy texture and taste which I don't like. Reminds me too much of instant noodles.
The chashu was chewy stiff, flat salty flavour and didn't taste fresh.
The Tempura Set (RM28++).
The fried items were nice. Light crisp, mildly savoury sweet outside. The prawns, squid and vegetables inside were juicy sweet and fresh.
Nice.
The rice was moist and lumpy.
Oyster Porridge or Kaki Zousui (price RM28++).
Just realised that kaki in Japanese means 牡蠣 or oyster 😄
The oyster porridge was full of layers of quite robust savoury flavours with the rice providing a subtle underlying sweetness. There were about half a dozen plump seasoned oysters (not the raw type).
It's nice. Thanks Chef Chung Deming of The Quarters restaurant in Singapore for the recommendation.
Information for you👌 Yaoki is the stalwart of Japanese restaurants in JB. I shall be back to try more things on their extensive menu including their sushi, sashimi, yakitori etc. They have an impressive stock of soju, sake and other spirits 🍺 Service was friendly and helpful. Our glasses of hot green tea were constantly topped up.
