On the way to the durian plantation in Balik Pulau, our guide Ronny brought us to downtown BP for Kim Laksa. It's the most famous Penang asam laksa stall in Balik Pulau.

When I saw that Kim Laksa is located in an old corner coffee shop with raw wood cladding, I am in love already. I will travel anywhere for a chance to eat at rustic, laid back places like this 😄

Kim Laksa is the only food stall inside Nan Guang 南光 coffee shop.

Second generation owner Christine's mum Kim started the stall 80 years ago. Most of that time, they were in Nan Guang coffee shop.

Kim Laksa serves Penang asam laksa and Thai laksa.

I didn't realised that they have Thai Laksa until we were leaving 😂 I have never tried Thai Laksa before and would love to try it one day.

(Have you tried? How does it taste?)

We had one bowl of Penang asam laksa each.

Penang asam laksa comes with a mound of thick bee hoon (rice noodles) in a bowl of fish and spice stock, raw vegetable garnish and a scoop of hae ko (fermented black prawn sauce).

Kim Laksa's asam soup was medium bodied with a lot of soft grainy mashed mackerel fish. The mashed fish was very fresh. The savoury tangy spicy soup complemented the taste of the green, citrusy zest of the fresh raw vegetable, onion, torch ginger flower, pineapple etc.

I like it that the tangy taste came from pulpy asam gelugur fruit which is not as sharp sour tasting as tamarind paste (which I don't like). Overall, the asam soup was relatively clean tasting and mild.

The scoop of hae ko 虾膏 added a more robust savoury sweet layer to the quite clean tasting savoury sweet zesty tangy soup.

I like the quality of Kim Laksa's thick bee hoon. They were tender with a light bounce (and not the chewy plastic spring which I dislike).

If you are like me who love the unique savoury sweet taste of hae ko, you can ask for a bit more to stir into your bowl of asam laksa. I got more kick from the soup this way.

Get a nutmeg juice to go with your asam laksa or Thai laksa.

Walk around downtown Balik Pulau after laksa 😄

Information for you 👌 If you are in Balik Pulau, do check out Kim Laksa. It's nice and is the local townsfolk favourite. The ambiance is rustic, everyone here was friendly. You will bring back happy memories and authentic foodie stories to tell.

While you are here, try also their Thai laksa. I understand, they allow mixing of asam laksa and Thai laksa. Try that too and let us know how it tastes!!
