JB social media is now abuzz about TD Point, a new makan hotspot in Taman Daya of Johor Bahru. So, we came here to explore, stumbling upon Sunflower Bakery & Restaurant.
TD Point Retail Mall is a cluster of some 30 low rise shops. Parts of the mall are still under construction or renovation. Despite the name, most of the shops are F & B with just a sprinkling of retail shops. Some trendy concepts like Mackenzie fried chicken, bubble tea, some familiar genre like Penang food, steamboat and even local favourites like Ayong Ikan Bakar. TD Point has attracted the attention of curious locals.
Sunflower Bakery & Restaurant is located at the main entrance of the shopping and dining cluster.
Stepping into Sunflower Bakery & Restaurant, it's a small space inside, bright and comfortable.
The menu is typical of such genre of family oriented affordable "modern coffee shops" in Malaysia where there are local favourites like nasi lemak, mee siam, kway teow soup, mee hoon kueh etc as well as breads, cakes, chops and spaghetti etc. For drinks, there are sodas, floats, iced teas etc along with traditional Nanyang coffee. So, there's something for everyone young and old.
I like their classic traditional mee hoon kueh (price RM8.50+) - even a little surprised by it's authenticity which is comparable to those at mee hoon kueh specialist shops.
I like the savoury soup which is made by boiling old hens. Minced pork, pork slices, pork balls added layers of more savoury sweetness to the soup.
I like the thick hand torn kway's slight chewy spring to the bite and subtle wheat flour taste.
I am pleased that they use sayur manis (mani chai) because to me, no other vegetable will do for mee hoon kueh.
We also tried their ma la version of mee hoon kueh (price RM10.50+).
Everything is the same - thick chewy springy kway, pork slices, mince pork, pork balls etc but they changed 2 things. Added a bit of ma la paste to the chicken soup and switched chai sim for mani chai.
I heard this ma la version is well received and catching on in popularity. The ma la adds a mild sourish taste and spicy heat to the soup. But, I would still choose the classic mee hoon kueh anytime, if only because of the lack of mani chai in the ma la version.
We also had the classic fishball kway teow soup (price RM8.50+). Same old hen chicken soup, minced pork, pork slices etc with handmade fishballs. Comforting bowl especially on days when you just want something hot and soupy.
We tried the trendy Milky Toast Sandwich.
We had the one with ham, cheese, omelette, greens (price RM8.90+). It's a nice simple sweet savoury sandwich which went well with my coffee.
The traditional Nanyang kopi has nice smooth medium body, and layered mild bitter sweetness. It's a nice cuppa for chilling out or getting a caffeine fix.
Information for you 👉 We like the traditional mee hoon kueh, milky toast sandwich and old school kopi here. Next time, we shall try their other dishes such as nasi lemak and mee siam. Maybe round up with a cake too 😄
JB has spawned several homegrown brands of such family oriented affordable restaurants serving good Nanyang kopi along with a wide range of dishes from perennial traditional favourites to trendy Instagrammables all in one place. My top of the mind brand is The Toast 👈 click
