I am very happy today as we stumbled upon an excellent Penang style Hokkien prawn mee at 新龙茶餐室 Sin Long coffee shop in Taman Mount Austin in JB.
新龙茶餐室 is located opposite the low cost flats in relatively quiet Mutiara Emas which is sandwiched between the busy side of Mount Austin and JUSCO / IKEA malls. (新龙茶餐室 doesn't have an English name. I call it Sin Long here for easy reference.)
新龙茶餐室 opened just 6 months ago. It was still low profile and quiet here. There were an ayam penyet stall, a Hokkien prawn mee / fish noodle stall and a pork noodle stall during the day shift.
We ordered our Penang Hokkien prawn mee from this stall named "Delicious Cuisine". We also had the fish bee hoon soup, and ayam penyet from the adjacent stall. A lot of food for 2 people.
The ayam penyet and fish bee hoon soup were good, but the dish that wowed me and made my day was this Penang prawn mee. (Price RM7.)
It looked ordinary - a mound of generic yellow noodles and kang kong in a brownish red soup topped with blanched lean pork slices, shelled prawns, egg and fried shallots. If there was any hint that this was going to be special, it was the deep rich colour of the broth.
Indeed it was - one seep of this brownish red concoction and I was bowled over by the robust savoury flavour with a sharp spicy kick. It was a full stack of savouriness and spiciness from fried prawn heads, dried anchovies, stock base made by boiling pork bones and hot spices.
Yummaey.
Hooked by the prawny stock, the rest of the dish wasn't bad either. The yellow noodles were just lightly blanched, so it still had a certain firmness (I prefer it a little softer).
Blanched fresh pork slices. I especially like the slices with a thin strip of fat at the top.
Inside the bowl, there were 2 fresh prawns the size of my pinkie.
Aromatic freshly fried shallot - not factory fried rancid nonsense.
Sambal chili with so much prawny savoury goodness.
The humble little stall is ran by Mdm Ng and her younger sister. Took a bit of coaxing to snap this picture of Mdm Ng. Her camera shy sister ran away 😂
Mdm Ng who is in her 80s was born in Alor Star, Kedah. She married a Singaporean and the family used to run a zhi char shop in Bedok Central in the 1980s. When her husband passed on, Mdm Ng returned to Malaysia.
When Mdm Ng's nephew opened 新龙茶餐室 coffee shop, the sisters took up a stall here. The sisters said "this was the way we were taught to make prawn noodles when we were children".
Recommended for you 👍 Excellent Penang style Hokkien prawn mee. You might deduct some points for the environment and ambiance, but the taste more than made up for it. This is a hawker gem.
