While we were in Kuala Lumpur, buddy SW wondered if we could get some nice roast goose. As usual, I turned to my Facebook friends for help. Chen Chen BBQ Goose, Duck in Pudu came up in the list of suggestions. We picked it because it was on our route and fit in our day's plans.
Chen Chen BBQ Goose, Duck is a corridor stall located along Jalan Seladang at the intersection with Lorong Yap Hing in Pudu, KL.
I like the quaint street side ambiance of Chen Chen Roast Goose - yeah lah, it may not be for everyone but this is authentic street food to me... 😄 We were here at 9:30am so it was quiet, cool and comfortable. During lunch, it may be crowded and a bit hotter.
Chen Chen serves a wide variety of roasts at competitive prices, even turkey and suckling pig. (For turkey, I think it is better to pre-book by calling ☎ +6012-233 3083 though.)
Our brunch of ¼ roast goose, intestines, gizzard, stewed vegetables, pork ball soup, and 3 bowls of rice for 4 of us. Total bill came to RM93.
We wanted goose liver as well but it was not available. (I spoke to the boss later and he told me all liver were pre-booked by restaurants 😂 )
We enjoyed this roast goose. The skin was thinner than duck but crispier. The meat was tender and juicy. Flavour was mildly savoury with slight sweetish natural goose taste which was quite distinct from duck.
The roast goose was chopped in big, thick chunks. I was initially worried that the meat might be fibrous and chewy, but my fears turned out to be unfounded. The goose meat was more tender and moist than duck. The big thick moist chunks ensured that we had meaty full flavoured mouthfuls.
The goose intestines and gizzard were lovely too.
Goose intestines are wider and smoother than chicken intestines. It had a nice springy tender crunch. It tasted savoury sweet of the unique goose kind.
Love the juicy crunchy bite and savoury sweetish flavour of the goose gizzard. It was smoother, more tender and crunchier than chicken or duck gizzard.
Stewed kai choy (mustard) flavoured with duck bones and skin. Mildly savoury tangy.
I like this flavoursome savoury sweet clear soup with duck wing, radish and pork balls.
There's an option of white rice or this "oil rice" which is flavoured with turmeric and butter. We chose the "oil rice". The taste and aroma was rather subtle, and it was not greasy. Rice grains used were of average quality only (often the case in Malaysia).
After our enjoyable goose meal, we chatted with the friendly owner Chong Foo Chuan 张富泉 (阿福 Ah Fook). Chen Chen BBQ Goose was founded by Ah Fook's father over 40 years ago. The stall is named after Ah Fook's mother Chen Chen 珍珍.
Ah Fook's son Ah Meng has joined the profession, so Chen Chen BBQ Goose, Duck is growing strong into the third generation.
Ah Fook and Ah Meng start work before day break. The goose are from Guangzhou China and are roasted with charcoal.
The first batch of roast goose goes to restaurants, as Chen Chen is the "OEM" supplier of roast goose for several restaurants in KL. (So, you could be eating Chen Chen roast goose without knowing it.) The second batch roasted for the stall is ready to serve at around 9:30am.
Information for you 👉 We enjoyed our goose meal today. I would love to return for another round of roast goose and innards.
(I have not tasted any benchmark roast goose in Hong Kong before, and so don't know how they compare. Will review this post after I tried a benchmark roast goose in HK or Guangzhou.)
During this KL trip, I found the The Exchange 106 Tower, a useful navigation landmark.
