| 港记云吞面 KP Noodle | 2, Jalan Bakawali 39, Taman Johor Jaya, 81100 Johor Bahru ⏰ 24 hours (Tues off) |
✍ 16 Jul 2025. Stumbled upon 港記 Kong Kee Wanton Mee while stalking Johor Jaya Bakawali area.
The corner coffee shop was at the intersection of Bakawali 39 and Bakawali 48.
Kong Kee was obviously very popular with locals.
Unker whom I was sharing table with told me that Kong Kee was a stall at Oktober coffee shop across the road before striking out on their own.
The congratulatory banners dated 1 Jun 2024 still hung in the coffee shop.
Ah..... now I remember. I did try Kong Kee before and wrote a post about it. The article from 2019 is appended in the archive below this post - just scroll down.
Anyway, back to today 😄
Action at the cooking station was frenetic but well under control.
I just ordered the smallest RM8 serving to try.
I was happy to see that the default was the Johor style - topped with anaemic white and tissue thin char siew. After so long eating Johor style, I learned to appreciate what the locals prefer.
This style reminded me of Yit Foh near KSL Mall, Heng Heng in Pontian, etc.
Vigorous tossing spread the lardy grease and (optional) chili sauce, enveloping every slender strand with mild savoury lardy flavour and aroma.
The noodles were done slightly softer than my ideal but still had a subtle crunch.
I enjoyed this combination of texture and flavour.
The char siew was pale as a sheet, with pink fringes. But, I like the taste in the tender slightly fibrous char siew. The flavour reminded me a bit of dried cuttlefish but much softer, milder. It's actually quite tasty and complemented the wanton noodles well.
A small detail but I noticed the extra crunch and juiciness of the choy sum. I enjoyed this. And, it was sweet, not bitter.
Simple wantons, slippery smooth dumplings with soft sweet savoury minced pork in sweet savoury pork soup.
It's not likely to blow your mind, especially if you are not Johor raised. If you ask locals, they will say it is "habit" and they are "used to it".
To me, I just enjoy learning to appreciate and respect what local people like when I travel. And, if I am around Johor Jaya, this is one of the top of my mind wanton mee places. Operates round the clock (except on Tuesdays), so this could be a supper option.
I wrote this with my phone while enjoying my kopi O kosong, soaking in the atmosphere of hyperlocal JB around me. Doesn't take much for me to have a great morning. Grateful 🙏

Kong Kee Wanton Mee @ Restoran Oktober Coffee Shop in Johor Jaya 港記云吞面
✍ 28 May 2019. Went to Restoran Oktober coffee shop for brekky and tried the wanton mee here.
港記云吞面 Kong Kee Wanton Mee is a popular stall at Restoran Oktober coffee shop. (Wanton mee seems more widespread in JB than in Singapore.)
Boss Ah Ping gets his noodles from a supplier but mixes his own sauces.
港記云吞面 serves old school Johor Bahru style wanton mee. Mound of egg noodles set on a shallow pool of sauce and topped with pale anaemic looking char siew. The accompanying small bowl of wantons in soup complete the RM5 set (2019 price).
I am won over by Kong Kee's wanton mee because I like the eggy noodles and old school sauce.
The noodles are tender but have a firmer core which together gave the strands a nice crunchy bite. I can hear in my inner ears, the soft popping sound of noodles breaking between my chewing teeth. I always eat my wanton mee with old school lardy, savoury sweet sauce spiked with chili sauce for a slightly spicy kick.
Shiok.
The thing is, I still haven't gotten used to the JB style of wanton mee char siew. They're too lean for my liking, and have neither caramelisation nor char outside. I also can't appreciate the reddish food colour fringe. But, taste wise its savoury sweetness is quite likeable actually, except that I am already spoilt by KL style char siew wanton mee lah 😂
But, at Restoran Oktober, this "problem" is easily fixed. I'll tell you how later, once we settled the wantons 😄
Nice old school wantons with smooth skin wrapping savoury sweet thumbnail size knob of soft minced fatty pork. The simple clear savoury sweet soup was nice too.
Pro tip: Eat your crunchy, lardy Kong Kee wanton mee with one the best sio bak (roast pork) in JB from the roasts stall at Oktober coffee shop. 洪记烧腊鸡饭 roasts stall also has good char siew, but I like their sio bak better 👈 click
Wash it all down with excellent sweet soups like cheng thng from the dessert stall at the coffee shop.
Information for you 👌 I think Kong Kee's crunchy noodles pairs well with 洪记's roast pork to make a great meal at Restoran Oktober coffee shop. Don't forget the sweet soup from the dessert stall which would make your meal perfect 😋 Life can be so good, thanks to such simple affordable pleasures.
