Original Stulang Laut Mee Rebus. Seaside Comfort Dish in the Happy Memories of Johor Folks

In the hearts of Johor Bahru folks, there are two mee rebus legends - Stulang Laut (and Hj Wahid).

Encik Jamaludin is the second generation owner of Stulang Mee Rebus which was founded by his father Encik Ramlan.

Encik Ramlan started Stulang Mee Rebus in the 1970s - it was then a push cart stall beside New Hong Kong Restaurant which was an open field facing the Stulang Laut beach. Stulang Mee Rebus moved into the Open University Malaysia canteen when it opened in 2002. It was here that I had my first taste of Stulang Mee Rebus. I couldn't remember much except that it was nice, different from the Singapore variety and it had crispy toppings.

They next moved to Cafe Enampuluhan (beside New Hong Kong Restaurant) as a tenant stall. I followed them there in 2012. Their next move was to Taman Molek when Cafe Enampuluhan relocated there. The Taman Molek shop closed a couple of years ago.

Encik Jamaludin runs the stall here at Taman Serene / Taman Pelangi Hawker Centre. His brother Jefrey ran the stall at Kampung Malayu before he passed on last December (2018). An uncle runs the Stulang Mee Rebus stall at Plaza Larkin. Owner of Cafe Enampuluhan runs a mee rebus stall in PJ Kopitiam in Permas Jaya.

Encik Jamaludin's dad Encik Ramlan is in his 70s now. He still comes to Jamaludin's hawker centre stall occasionally, and is still personally making the signature Stulang mee rebus kuah (sauce) on most days. Encik Ramlan used to work for Hj Wahid Mee Rebus and developed his own kuah recipe when he started Stulang Mee Rebus.

The soul of mee rebus is the starchy kuah or sauce. Stulang mee rebus' kuah is made mainly with potato, chicken stock and spices. The flavour is a blend of mildly sweet and spicy.

The fried crisp of flour and spices when mixed into the kuah adds a savoury layer to the sweet spicy sauce.

The essential raw green chili adds a refreshing spicy zing while a squeeze of calamansi gives the sauce a hint of citrusy zest.

Eat all these mildly sweet savoury spicy kuah, garnish with boiled yellow noodles and lightly blanched crunchy bean sprouts and a dash of kicap (no sambal chili, no prawns, no fried chicken, no tulang or lamb shank, etc). Each serving costs RM6.50 now (2019).

That's Stulang Laut mee rebus - simple and comforting, no frills throwback to old Johor Bahru. It is the childhood / adolescent memories of generations of Foon Yew High School 宽柔中学 students.

  1. First time I had this mee rebus cost RM1 per plate (1980s). The stall was located inside an abandoned shophouse next to New Hong Kong the ceiling looked like it was going to collapse.
