Koh Grill & Sushi Bar needs no introduction especially for Japanese
food fans in Singapore. It's a fun and cheerful place to enjoy delicious
sushi and Japanese style grills at wallet friendly (not cheap)
prices. They are most famous for their Shiok Maki.
Koh Grill & Sushi Bar is inside the Food Republic food court on level 4 of Wisma Atria Shopping Centre. It's a compact space but clean, intimate and comfortable. One side has glass walls that look out over Orchard Road below. Nice view and makes the space feels bigger.
There's a grill bar. We can see all the smoke and grilling action but it is well enclosed and ducted, so we did not get any grease or smell in our hair or clothes at all.
The menu books are thick, so we left the ordering to Brent who is a regular here - I assume lah as many of the staff seemed to
Brent ordered many sushi items. I am just going to let you feast your eyes on the sushi parade which came in a
quick march ๐
(I gave up trying to write down their names and take taste
notes.) Overall, I enjoyed everything. Really.
The flavours are well balanced and taste good. I didn't even need to
boost any sushi piece with soy sauce and wasabi. They were already
flavourful enough on their own.
Take this chawanmushi or steamed egg custard. It is one of the best I've ever tasted. So soft and smooth and packed with savoury umami eggy sweet flavours.
Shiok Maki, I presume. (Reminds me of Mr. Stanley's famous greeting on meeting Dr. Livingstone.)
Grilled unagi (eel) in the heart of the rice roll, aburi (torched) salmon on
top, smothered with too much rich mentai mayo sauce and crowned with tobiko
(flying fish roe).
There's so much sauce and roe that I almost forgot that this was actually a
rice roll ๐
Shiok lah.
This one is called Gen 2 Shiok Maki, filled with fried prawn instead of
unagi.
Equally shiok lah, again because of the indulgent sauce and flying
fish roe.
Tempura Moriawase (combination platter).
I enjoyed Shiok Maki so much that I tried to come back the same weekend but
it was booked solid ๐
๐ญ I also haven't tried their kushiyaki and sashimi. Next time
then.
Pro-tip: Book early to avoid disappointment ๐ Otherwise, walk in before
opening on a weekday, maybe got a bit of chance ๐
Good thing I took a snap of the bill. Otherwise, there's no way I can recall what we had (other than the Shiok Maki).
