I am a fan of Mui Siong Minced Meat Noodle stall's thick soft-crunchy pork liver but I haven't been there for a very long time, put off by the hour long queue at Veerasamy Road. So, when I heard about a branch in Bukit Merah Central known as Rong Fa, I quickly went there to calm my liver craving. The two stalls are almost the same in taste.
This bright, airy, spacious, and clean space is canteen by day and canteen-bar by night. Right now, most customers are people working in the surrounding industrial buildings.
Mui Siong was founded in 1970. Rong Fa was opened by founder's daughters Jennifer and Jasmine in 2015 while the stall at Veerasamy Road known as Jin Xi Lai was opened by brother Justin in 2017.
Queue up, make your orders, pay, take your pager, take your seat, go back to the stall to collect your food when your pager buzzes. Simple.
They have various options like fish balls, fish cake slices, pork slices, etc but I just ordered pork liver noodles. Yes, just mee pok noodles with blanched liver slices in soup. This set for $5.50.
The mound of mee pok noodles, bean sprout and sauce was topped with fried shallot and lard crouton. I added the cut chili. Mentally deducted some points for the factory fried shallot 😝
The noodles were nicely done soft al dente. The greasy sauce was savoury lardy spicy with a touch of tangy zing (from vinegar).
I am here only for Mui Siong's signature pork liver 😋 I asked for it to be cooked to more doneness. There's still a little bleeding but very little. I would love to have my pork liver done medium rare but today I just felt a little over cautious. (I am aiming for another pork liver stall nearby right after this 😂 Watch out for my next post.)
The signature thick soft-crunchy pork liver that won Mui Siong the honour of serving the most famous pork liver in Singapore. I love the powdery texture, soft-crunch, and characteristic liver taste. Fresh and it's almost like pâté in the mouth after chewing.
It's pretty addictive and with some 10 pieces in my bowl, it was more than enough to satisfy my craving for some time to come 😂 Very worth it 😄
I love Rong Fa's soup. It was loaded with savoury umami flavours with the taste of liver and pungent fried garlic. Rich depth of flavours indeed.
I haven't been to Mui Siong at Veerasamy Road for some time but my memory tells me that the soup and pork liver are comparable between Mui Siong Jin Xi Lai and Rong Fa. Both stalls' dry noodles don't really excite me a lot though. Next time, I shall try the noodle soup version (if they have).
Conclusion - it's almost the same thing at Rong Fa sans the queue of Veerasamy Road. That should be good news for some Mui Siong fans, especially those who drive or live / work around Bukit Merah.
