Ramen at Dontaku in City Square Mall in Johor Bahru

As a recent ramen convert, I am keen to look for a good ramen joint in Johor Bahru. As Dontaku Japanese Restaurant in City Square Mall has a good range of ramen, I harboured hopes that it will be my ramen haunt in JB.

Alas, it was not to be. I have tried the ramen at Dontaku several times but came away from recent visits unimpressed.

The medium bodied tonkotsu broth seemed heavy on MSG and salts. The thin pork belly chashu slices lacked flavour, stiff and were slightly dry and fibrous. The noodles were not fresh and even seemed to be like the instant ramen variety. I expected better for ramen at and over RM25 (after tax and service charge) for a pop.

My search for good ramen in Johor Bahru continues.

  1. Try kurotamon at city square. Just opposite to popular book store. This is by far the best ramen that I had in jb, though the price is on the high side.

    1. OK noted. Will try it. Thanks for the tip.

I firmly believe that taste is subjective and so, warmly welcome differing viewpoints as it makes this blog better :-D But, I disapprove negative comments that are anonymous or hide behind fake identities. I feel that that is unethical in the same way as speaking ill of others behind their backs. I look forward to all your comments :-D Thank you. (Date: 18 Dec 2015)
