Majestic Peking Duck - Savouring an Imperial Dish in your Flip Flops - Only in Singapore JK1818

Majestic Peking Duck stall at Makansutra's Gluttons Bay opened with much media fanfare last month (Jul 2016) - touted as the world's first hawker stall to offer this iconic Chinese dish normally served in upmarket restaurants.

Don't play, play, Chef Yang Lai Fatt, Majestic's Executive Chef was in the house stall's crowded, tiny kitchen working his way around the hot Apollo oven, shelves, kitchen sink and other staff at his elbows. Kudos to the Majestic group of restaurants for their commitment to bring this up-market dish to the mass market.

I like this Organic Leafy Salad with Sliced Duck (SGD12).

Nice fresh crunchy greens tossed in a Thai inspired (I think lah... ) savoury sweet sauce with hints of tanginess and nuttiness from crushed toasted peanuts. The tender roasted duck slices added another layer of savouriness to the interesting salad.

Egg Noodles with Sliced Duck (SGD9).

It's thick slices of roast duck, leafy vegetables and mushrooms in a gooey starchy sauce set in a crispy nest of golden brown deep fried egg noodles.

Nice blend of mild savoury sweet flavour and interesting mix of textures from tender duck, crunchy vegetables to crispy noodles.

Crispy Cereal Duck Fried Rice (SGD8).

Likable fried rice - not greasy, the loose, egg coated rice grains separate easily, the crispy cereal added texture and flavour, and the savoury spongy bits of roast duck buried in the mound complete this interesting, if plain looking dish. I would have enjoyed this fried rice even more if there was a little bit more moistness.

Finally, Majestic's renowned Peking Duck brought to you at a hawker stall at SGD24 for ten pieces - a world first. No service charge. No GST. (I understand this goes for SGD68++ at Majestic restaurants.)

Hand wrapped on order - it's a thick juicy slice of roast duck breast, a crunchy stick of fresh cucumber and strips of scallion julienne slathered with a dollop of savoury sweet tangy sauce folded into an eggy envelope (paper thin rice flour and egg crepe).

The roast duck skin and meat were soft and juicy - personally, some crispness in the skin would make it perfect for me. The meat and skin have slight flavour - my preference is for duck with deeply infused savouriness and ideally some natural gaminess. The thick house blended sauce has robust savoury sweet flavours which dominated the whole dish. Still, this is the best Peking duck you can get in Singapore for this price.

👍If you like a quickie introduction to this Chinese imperial court dish in a block party ambiance in your berms and flip flops, toasting your friends loudly with a mug of icy foaming beer in your fist - duck those restaurants with dress code - you can get your royal duck, feast like an Emperor for a song and dance here at Majestic Peking Duck stall at Gluttons Bay by Makansutra.

Disclosure: Please note that this was a media tasting.
