CLOSED Durian Cendol Southern in Johor Bahru JB

It's durian season and all too soon I am suffering from durian overdose. Too much sugar I am told warned and I can feel the effects in my body too. I have to stay off durians for a while, but with durians durians everywhere, the craving is getting to me. So, I turned to durian cendol - recalling that there is a street side stall in Johor Jaya Teratai that had been buzzing hot in social media.

天气热的时候, 冰凉冰凉的特别好享受 😋 Jalan Teratai 73 (在 Plentong GIANT 附近). 12:00 noon to 6:00pm (Monday off).

The buzz had subsided a little - there wasn't the legendary queue when we were at the stall around noon. The boss told us that the queues build up from around 1:00pm.

The famous durian cendol of Johor Jaya Teratai. RM5.50 - eat at the stall. RM6.00 takeaway in plastic tub.

Using this ice crusher, the ice here is just the right texture for me. It's not those hard ice cubes which I dislike nor is it so fine that it melts quickly into water, diluting the taste, everything in the bowl and our enjoyment.

The "green worms" - they look dull and doesn't have the luminous glow and deep green colour of ...... fakes. The pale green colour is a sign that they are made with real pandan leaves, not with chemical essence and food colouring.

The "worms" were also soft - made mainly with mung bean and rice flour, unlike the bouncy springy "worms" made mainly with tapioca starch.

The coconut milk was creamy and fresh. The white coconut milk was laced with brownish gula Melaka (palm sugar) but it was not overly sweet. The fragrance of coconut milk and gula Melaka was not strong though.

There's also cincau or grass jelly in the bowl.

If the "green worm" is the heart, and the coconut milk the soul, then the durian is the crown of this cendol.

The yellow flesh was moist and creamy. The flavour was quite intense bitter sweet leaning more on bitter. It was a good durian.

It's humble kampung durians but their taste wasn't very far off from the fancy and expensive Mao Shan Wang.

Of course, there is the classic cendol biasa for RM1.50, and then there is this ultimate "Cendol Special Southern" with "green worms", "black worms (cincau)", red beans, glutinous rice, durian and ice cream thrown in - all for RM6.50.

👍 Cooling cendol is always good on hot days in Malaysia and Singapore. This durian cendol is worth the calories and sugar. Do check out Cendol Southern stall when you are in the Johor Jaya area.

  1. Hi,

I went to search for this cendol southern at the location as mentioned in your blog but it was not there anymore... I tried looking for it at the MayBank there , and also outside the wet market in Johor Jaya (and there happens to be another night food centre there) , they are not to be found there as well...

    1. Hi, I am really not sure. Such mobile stalls tend to move about frequently and are thus quite hard to track where they are. Hope someone who knows can help update us. Thank you for your feedback. Hope you find what you love to eat.

  3. Looked for this stall some time ago and saw a small faded sign at the gate. They have moved to the quiet hawker centre next to the market in the Johor Jaya Dedap area.
