✍ 16 Sep 2023. Buddy Mary just had brunch at Yong Peng Duck Noodles 永平鸭's new shop. They just moved here recently (Mary said opening ceremony bouquets still fresh 💐 ). I haven't been here at their new location but Mary said the food is still nice. I need to go try myself soon 😋 (Thanks Mary for the update and photo 🙏 )
✍ 29 Jun 2017. We pulled into little Yong Peng town on the way to Segamat for durians 😄 We stopped at Yong Peng Duck Noodles, the most popular and famous braised duck stall in town.
Yong Peng Duck Noodles or Gerai Mee Daging Itik Yong Peng is a stall in Gerai Jalan Mah Choo, a small hawker centre in Yong Peng a few streets west of the main road.
The breakfast traffic this Thursday morning. I like the laid back kampung ambiance of this small hawker centre surrounded by lush leafy trees.
Most people are here for Mr. Wong Ah Sing's Hokkien style braised duck and noodles.
Mr. Wong and his wife Mdm Koh have been running Yong Peng Duck Mee stall for nearly 40 years.
Friendly Mr. Wong works at a frenetic pace. The Wong couple takes orders, prepares the food, serves, collects money, clears tables and clean up all by themselves.
Mdm Koh does all the cutting on a huge Chengai wood chopping board.
The large Chengai wood chopping board shaped by years of hacking ducks. Weathered and scared, this old block of wood still has many good years left 😄
We had duck noodles, braised duck and braised pork belly. All these food for RM40 (2017 price).
Mr. Wong uses local tropical 半菜鸭 duck which is a skinny breed with thin skin, nearly no fat and fibrous meat. 半菜鸭 duck is usually used for braising (whereas cold clime fat ducks are more suitable for roasting). Braising tenderises 半菜鸭 duck's stringy, fibrous meat.
Mr. Wong's ducks are done in the Hokkien style using his mother's recipe. The braising stock is thicker, darker, and more savoury (salty) than the Teochew style (more common in Johor Bahru). Like the Teochew style, Mr. Wong's braising stock is also herbal and he uses over 20 herbs in his recipe.
The duck is cut into small pieces. The duck meat is tender and juicy with braising stock infused in its slightly chewy fibres. The main flavours come from the savoury herbal braising stock. There is no duck flavour (good news if you do not like duck gaminess 😄 ). Personally, I like a little bit of natural duck gaminess in my ducks 😄
The thick flat soft springy yellow noodles are slightly sweet, so they make a nice slurpy mouthful balanced by the gooey savoury herbal stock.
I also love Mr. Wong's braised pork belly. The skin, fat and meat are done just right - tender, bouncy and juicy. The fresh pork has a nice natural porky sweetness which is complemented by the savoury herbal stock.
👉 One hundred kilometres north of JB, Yong Peng is a natural food stopover for the drive from JB / Singapore to Malacca or KL. If you like to try old school Hokkien style braised duck or want to experience Yong Peng folks' favourite duck, do check out Yong Peng Duck Noodles stall at Gerai Jalan Mah Choo.
