✍10 Apr 2024. Popular place for chicken rice in Taman Pelangi at Nasi Ayam Kian Huat.
They moved here from further up the street and I haven't been here since they moved. They were as busy as ever and now known as Nasi Ayam Kian Huat.
Kian Huat is a no frills, spartanly furnished coffee shop. Quite common set up in Johor Bahru and Malaysia. People only come in to be fed 😁 If the food isn't good, there is nothing to bring them in 😲
Kian Huat is well loved for their fried chicken, poached chicken, fried chicken chop, char siew and siew yok. It's the char siew that fly as we didn't managed to get any 😅
Anyway, their best sellers are the fried stuff - fried chicken and chicken chop 😀
I love the natural undressed look of the poached chicken. Not much dressing.
It's cooked through, no jelly fat beneath the skin (I wish there was), skin was soft smooth, meat was tender, moist not juicy, slightly chewy. Chicky flavour was very slight.
I known many people like their chicken like this even though I would prefer it juicier, softer, and have more chicken taste.
Kian Huat's fried chicken is actually more popular and I can see why. It was the same as the poached chicken except that it was fried to golden brown outside. The skin slightly crisp, had a sweet savoury flavour which added to the tastiness of the chicken.
The rice was tender firm, nutty, sticky, savoury, garlicky, not overly greasy nor wet, nice.
Chili was zesty, spicy, garlicky, sourish.
The soup sweet with old cucumber was very nice.
Don't come here expecting to get your socks blown off. It's just a place where people come in for an affordable, tasty workday staple to power them through to dinner time. However, I did enjoy the hyperlocal atmosphere and food here, especially the fried chicken.
I still haven't had their char siew and siew yok.

✍ 26 Jun 2017. Buddy Gwen tipped me off on a popular chicken rice stall in Kim Kooi kopitiam which she and her hubby stumbled upon in Taman Pelangi while doing their marketing there.
Update: Stall has moved to Nasi Ayam Kian Huat, 135 Jalan Sri Pelangi, Taman Pelangi.
Noticing that there was always a queue at the chicken rice stall, Gwen and hubby tried the chicken here and liked it.
The Chinese only signboard at the stall said "怡保仔燒雞飯 Ipoh Boy Roast Chicken Rice". The stall actually serves a few different dishes. While in the queue, I chatted with two friendly gentlemen who are regulars here - they enthusiastically recommended the fried chicken, poached chicken, lemon chicken, and char siew which they said are very good.
(Note to self: They also recommended the siew yok at the Taman Pelangi pasar pagi.)
As the lady boss was very busy clearing the queue of customers, I didn't want to interrupt her work.
As I was alone and this will be my second breakfast this morning, I ordered just a plate of fried chicken rice as this looked like their most popular dish. Then, I shared a table with friendly locals in the quite spacious and airy kopitiam.
A plate of rice, topped with roast chicken, a soup and a small dish of chili sauce for RM4 altogether.
Though the rice was made with average quality grains, there was a big heap of it and the rice was aromatic and well infused with mild layers of savouriness. The rice stuck together but they had a tender-firmness and a nice nutty bite. It was also not overly greasy. I enjoyed this rice.
There was a generous amount of meat for the RM4 price tag. The meat was tender and had a slight natural chicken sweetness. I like the taste of the browned skin - it was savoury sweet and aromatic, and I was hoping there was more skin 😋 ( 😄 Next time, I'll buy a whole bird for all the skin.)
The chili sauce is nice too - fresh, spicy, sourish.
The mildly salty sourish clear soup is made with chicken bone, old cucumber and preserved Chinese mustard.
👉 I like this chicken rice in Kian Huat (formerly Kim Kooi) kopitiam but this is just a pre-view. I need to gather a few kakis and whack a whole chicken and a few other things like the char siew, fried chicken chop etc. Will blog again after that but in the mean time, if you are around Pelangi during brekky or lunch time, do check out 怡保仔燒雞飯. Tell me how you found it 😄

Kim Hooi kopitiam is along Jalan Sri Pelangi. "Same row as Hong Leong Bank" - in the JB way of giving directions 😄
Legs of folks queueing at the chicken rice stall 😃

Try the mee hun kuey which is right beside the chicken stall. Not bad too.I always ask the boss to cook it chilli padi which gives the soup a little kick.
ReplyDeleteyes yes I noticed that they are very popular too. Thank you Mr Ong for the tip.
DeleteTony, is the Taman Pelangi pasar pagi you mentioned the one that is open only on Thurs mornings.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure of it's opening hours. But it was open when I was there on a Monday.
DeleteMonday and Thursday mornings
DeleteDelicious food without the msg, I think. I don't get palpitations eating the food unlike some other chicken rice places...
ReplyDeleteThe kopitiam has moved :( Would love to know where they are now
ReplyDeleteThey moved further back along the same row of shops (basically moving away from hong leong bank). It’s a smaller shop now. Same name. Same signboard but smaller.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the information.
DeleteI ate their chicken rice when they first started. No queue and business that time. Then my mum told the boss change timing to open shop. After that we all need to queue for it sigh
ReplyDeleteYou describe the fried chicken, is it the roasted one then they use hot oil to fry one ah. Because i always eat the fried breaded chicken with lemon sauce(called as fried chicken for us), the roasted chicken (brown colour crispy skin)and honey char siew with roasted pork. All are nice
ReplyDeleteMost impt cheap and big portion. Feel full and satisfied every time. Thanks introducing them.
