We purposely chose the Labis route from JB to Segamat (for durian 😄 ) so that we can lunch at the famous Chee Keng Yam Rice shop 金记芋头饭 😋
Chee Keng yam rice shop is an old laid back place where local folks saunter in for yam rice, pork based braised side dishes and bak kee 肉支 (pork) soup - quintessential Hokkien comfort food eaten at home.
Elder Mr. Tey still personally cut the fresh pork into strips known as "bak kee" 肉支 the way it has been done for decades. I soon found out that the uber fresh pork plays a big role in Chee Keng's simple yet marvellous braised dishes and soup. Elder Mr. Tey's father took over Chee Keng over 50 years ago when the founder (his boss) passed away.
Some things don't change at Chee Keng. Their signature yam rice is still fried in a large wood fired wok. (I wanna come back to watch the food being prepared.)
The braised pork and innards are cooked in a separate wood fired pot.
Out at the front, the younger Mr. Tey serves the braised pork dishes and makes the bak kee soup.
The dishes are basically pork and innard based. The dishes are light handedly done and the Teys are sparing with sauces. We can taste the fresh tender pork's natural sweet flavours which are complemented by the mild savoury braising stock.
Oh so delicious braised pork cheek 猪头肉.
The braised pork belly is tender and juicy. It tastes sweet and complemented by a slight savouriness from the dark braising stock.
Spongy, springy braised small intestines.
Braised large intestines. All well washed and cleaned. Braised to just right doneness.
The essential braised tofu. Softly rough outside, so smooth inside.
Simple, homely, oh so lovely stir fried crunchy bamboo shoot slices.
Simple, delicious soup of pork intestines, pork "bak kee" 肉支 and tofu - that's all 😋 Must order this soup.
The starchy sweet yam rice is just mildly flavoured with a bit of savouriness and aroma. There wasn't much yam in my portion 😄
👉 Nice, kampung dining experience. Delicious traditional Hokkien comfort food. Made with fresh pork and done just right, the old way - it is guaranteed to please seekers of authentic local experiences.
