Thanks to tip off by buddy Henry Lee, we got a taste of Hock Chew noodles in JB at 肥婆福州美食 stall in 龍城餐館. Roughly translated, it is Fat Lady Hock Chew Delicacies at Restoran Long Cheng at Jalan Api-Api 9 in Taman Megah Ria, Masai.
肥婆福州美食 Fat Lady Hock Chew at Long Cheng coffee shop is in a quiet residential part of Taman Megah Ria in Masai, Johor Bahru.
Fat Lady has been here for a long time - it is one of those laid back corner coffee shop stalls where locals gather for a meal, a drink and catch up on neighbourhood goings on. But, such local stalls tend not to be well known beyond their immediate neighbourhood. Thanks to social media, word of mouth about such stalls have reached further and travels faster.
You won't find any fat lady at Fat Lady Hock Chew stall. Ah Hee has been working at the stall with his mum since he was a child, and continued running Fat Lady Hock Chew after she passed away 9 years ago.
I started with a plate of noodles with pork trotters cooked in red yeast rice wine 红糟酒 (which costs RM7).
The noodles are tossed in a savoury dark soy sauce and lard blend. If you like lard, this is for you - it is aromatic, smooth and smears your lips like greasy lip gloss.
Ah Hee cooks the noodles to a soft crunch. The flat yellow noodles pick up the sauce and lard well. I like it - the noodles were slurpy delicious.
红糟猪脚 Pork trotters cooked in red (glutinous) rice wine which is a signature Hock Chew dish were tender and have layers of mild savouriness with the characteristic taste of red rice wine. Beneath the taste of red rice wine, I could still taste a bit of the pork's natural sweetness.
There were interesting textures as there were tender chewy skin, soft fat, tender meat and bouncy jelly-like tendons.
Ouu... aromatic, flavoursome, crisp fresh lard croutons.
I also had a red rice wine mee sua with pork trotters (cost RM7). (This is the dry version. The soup version is available only on Sundays.)
The mee sua were soft (but not mushy). They were enveloped in a red rice wine based sauce with is savoury with a fermented rice wine taste and aroma.
The same delicious pork well infused with red rice wine flavour and colour.
👉 Thanks to Fat Lady 肥婆福州美食 we are able to get tasty Hock Chew noodles in JB without having to go to Yong Peng (Johor's Little Hock Chew). If you like dishes cooked with red rice wine, check out Fat Lady in Taman Megah Ria.

Slurpilicious noodles. Just be careful of the pork trotter bones which may splinter.
