Otak Shiduoli · Best Otak Otak in JB · Some Say Better than Muar ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Otak-Shiduoli-JB

Otak Shiduoli, formerly at Storia Cafe at Jalan Storey is the most famous otak otak stall in Johor Bahru.

Otak Shidouli moved here at Jalan Maju near Plaza Pelangi about 3 months ago.

The family matriarch who founded Shiduoli with her husband over 30 years ago is still grilling their home made otak otak at the stall. Shiduoli is now headed by her son Ah San supported by family members, including the enthusiastic third generation.

Madame deftly works the grill like piano keys 😄 You don't often get food prepared by a towkay neo with 30 years of experience 😄

We can smell aroma rising from the grill with the smoke from charred attap leaves wrapping the spicy otak otak.

There are two types otak otak at Shiduoli, fish meat and fish head. While waiting for my otak otak at the stall, it is common to hear others ordering 30, 50 or even 100 sticks at one go 😂

Served hot from the grill, the fish otak otak is thick like a fat orangey red floppy tongue (price 90 sen each). They are not very big - each piece of otak otak fits snugly into a table spoon 😄 I am glad that they are exactly the same as those I tasted at their old Jalan Storey stall over 5 years go.

The otak otak is soft, tender and moist with warm juice. The bits of fresh Mackerel fish and fish paste are held together with coconut milk and mildly hot aromatic spices. We can feel the soft bits of fish and taste the fish's natural sweetness under the mild sweet and spicy flavours.

There is also a slight smokey taste from the char at the bottom of the otak otak which had infused a bit of taste from the burnt attap leaves.

Shiduoli also serves fish head otak otak (price RM1 each). There are meat and fish head bones in the otak otak. The head bones have a slight fishy taste, the pleasant kind.

I like both the fish meat and fish head otak otak, but the former a little bit more.

Besides their famed otak otak, Shiduoli also serves nasi lemak, mee siam, fried fish cake, fish ball, fried bee hoon, fried crackers, etc breakfast food which are all quite nice too.

4-Star (out of 5). Shiduoli has the best otak otak that I have tasted in Singapore and JB. Some people say that Shiduoli has better otak otak than Muar, the otak otak capital of Malaysia. I have not tried many otak otak stalls in Muar, but yeah, for attap wrapped otak otak Shiduoli is better than those that I did try in Muar.

  1. Otak-Otak Shiduoli is indeed great, I have been to their shop for about 10 years now.

Another good Otak-Otak in JB is at Plaza Angsana, they sell beside the Mee Rebus Haji Wahid stall at the outdoor food court. It is also home-made 👍🏻

  2. Agreed, Tony! The Muar otak otak lost its footing. Not nice anymore.

  5. Been eating here for close to 30yrs. The boss lives a street away from us. But i actually prefer to get the otah from Waterworks Laksa (also supplied by Shiduoli), because at WW, they are able to grill at a slower pace, and the otah turns out better.

    1. Thank you coal shover for the insight. I like the otak otak at WW Lakes too. Fat and succulent. Flavoursome spicy sweet with subtle toastiness.

    1. No problem. From KSL, walk towards the Petron station at the traffic junction. Cross over to Plaza Pelangi and walk on the left (Plaza on ur right hand side).continue walking straight to the first row on shophouses on your right and you will find the place.
