Starting my exploration of Korean restaurants in JB with Korean Home Cook & BBQ in Permas Jaya which is recommended by several makan buddies.

Korean Home Cook & BBQ is on the second floor of a shophouse building at Jalan Permas Utama in Bandar Baru Permas Jaya, Johor Bahru. (It occupies the former premises of Sodam Korean BBQ which has moved to Taman Sutera.)

Gotta climb up a flight of stairs to get to the restaurant.

The interior in the little upstairs restaurant is bright, neat and simple, very clean with very clean lines. It is a very comfortable environment to enjoy our meal.

At Korean Home Cook & BBQ, the staff will grill your meat at the grilling station sealed off by glass. So, it is smoke free inside the dining area.

We ordered a BBQ set for two persons and the first things to arrive were the banchan set of 11 small dishes (banchan is customary in Korean restaurants).

Of the 11 small sides, I liked only the crunchy spicy daikon radish 😜

Our BBQ set starts with Dwaeji Galbi (grilled pork spare ribs). The pork spare ribs were grilled by the staff in the BBQ station and served at our table (saving us from grilling the meat ourselves). We weren't in the mood for grilling our own food today, so we like this arrangement 😄

The Dwaeji Galbi was tender and juicy, the marinade gave it a mild savoury sweetness which we like.

Next meat dish was Samgyeopsal (pork belly with three layers - skin, fat and meat).

Mildly savoury with slight sweetness. The texture was tender leaning towards slight stiffness.

The grilled pork belly and spare ribs are eaten with sauces, spicy bean paste, garlic, onion, chili etc folded in a crunchy green lettuce leaf.

We like both the Samgyeopsal and Dwaeji Galbi. The pork belly's slight stiffness was complemented by the soft crunchy lettuce.

The set came with Gyeran Jjim (Korean steamed egg). The beaten egg is steamed with chopped vegetables like scallion and carrot. Eggy and sweet with a bit of savouriness from seasoning. Nice, though not memorable enough for me to order this à la carte.

The set comes with a choice of Doenjang-jjigae (bean paste stew) or Kimchi-jjigae (kimchi stew). For our first visit, we opted for the iconic kimchi stew. It's lean pork slices, cubes of soft tofu, chopped scallion, onion, etc cooked in mildly savoury spicy kimchi stew.

Besides the BBQ set, we had a Jjukkumi Bokkeum (spicy stir fried baby octopus).

I like the tender crunchy texture of octopus. The savoury spicy sauce was robust and that was all I could taste in this dish except for the mild sweetness from the soft noodles.

Boiled white rice helps is necessary to balance the mostly robust savoury and spicy flavours of the dishes.

Our total bill came to RM110 (no GST, no service charge). We were totally filled and felt the pricing is reasonable for the amount of food and comfortable environment.
