We had lunch today at the Tanba Yakiniku 炭馬烧肉 outlet at Twin Galaxy, a newly opened residential-commercial complex at Jalan Dato' Abdullah Tahir (10 minutes drive from JB CIQ without traffic).
Tanba Japanese BBQ is at the ground floor of Twin Galaxy. Paid parking is available street level (most convenient) or in the basement at RM5 per entry or RM2 per hour. Parking is plentiful in the three basement levels but there are some narrow and sharp corners, so do take note.
The interior of Tanba is impressive and it is huge - the restaurant can seat about 200 people comfortably.
Tanba offers buffet as well as a la carte BBQ. At my age, I rarely indulge in buffets, so a la carte is my usual choice. But, for today's invited tasting, I experienced both buffet and a la carte dishes.
Ordering the buffet is easy - just take the order sheet and tick the boxes beside the dishes that you want - there are beef, pork, chicken, mutton, fish, sushi, sashimi, vegetables etc. There's even ostrich 😄 Ordering a la carte is even easier - just order the dish you like on the menu.
We ticked a whole range of meat, seafood and vegetables from the buffet menu, and a couple of premium meat dishes like Kurobuta pork 黑豬 a la carte.
I was glad to see that Tanba BBQ uses charcoal to fire the grill.
I mean, it's real charcoal, not even lava rocks (in my mind, for BBQ, gas and electric grills are "disqualified" 😜). Lady boss Gemma said real charcoal is the only way to get the taste of authentic Japanese yakiniku - bravo 👏👏👏
We ticked a lot of boxes in the buffet menu and ordered a couple of a la carte dishes.
We put a lot of things through the grill during our lunch 😄 Grilling is DIY i.e. do it yourself, which is simple and fun as the food comes in small manageable plates. More people, more fun as the grilling work is shared 😄
The staff changes the grilling mesh regularly so that our food tastes clean with no charred bits.
A silent fan under the grill sucked away most of the smoke and grease, so our clothes and hair were spared from most of the smoke and splatter. There was a bit of heat directly above the grill, but the restaurant is air conditioned, so we were very comfortable.
I like the meats at Tanba as they taste fresh. The beef are A5 grade Japanese Wagyu. We have a choice of four sauces which is slathered onto the meat - sweet, spicy, black pepper, garlic.
I tried all the four sauces and they all came out well balanced and flavourful. Tanba is good with their sauces.
There's dipping sauce and wasabi on each table.
I normally don't use dipping sauces as I like to enjoy my food's natural, original flavours. But, after tasting Tanba's dipping sauce, I realised that they are well balanced, interesting and tasty. They are quite mild, so they complement rather than mask the natural taste of the food. Tanba is good with their sauces, double confirmed.
Ate so much - just highlight a few that I enjoyed the most.
All fatty and marbled cuts, I like 😄😋
I like this Bacon Roll with Cherry Tomatoes. The juicy tomatoes add a bit of sourish sweet zest to the savoury sweet toasty grilled bacon. Nice.
If you like fish skin and collagen, get this large fried salmon fish head (RM25++ a la carte).
There's salmon and tuna sashimi, so we don't have to have grilled meats for the whole meal.
Tanba's maki and sushi are good too. Try a few from the buffet menu.
I was surprised, delighted with the tastiness of this plain looking enoki mushroom with a yellowish sauce. But wait, I shouldn't be so surprised as it just confirms again that Tanba's sauces are good.
There's lots more but I leave it to you to discover yourself lah 😄
Tanba serves a wide range of juices, cocktails, beers, Japanese whisky, and of course, sake.
