Ang Moh 紅毛豬雜湯 is a humble hawker stall serving delicious fish soup and pork organ soup for over 30 years at a corner coffee shop in Tampoi off the Skudai Highway near Plaza Angsana.
Hawker boss Ah Bing has been working at this stall for 20 years, which was founded by his dad Ang Moh 30 years ago. Hence, the stall is known as Ang Moh Pork Organ Soup 紅毛豬雜湯.
Ah Bing's wife Ah Xia does most of the cooking now.
Ah Bing's mum still helps out at the stall.
For decades, the row of dingy coffee shops and eateries along Jalan Dato Mohammed Seth have served Johoreans on the way to downtown JB and to Singapore.
Many Johoreans and not a few Singaporeans also found their way here for good and affordable food. Ang Moh Pork Organ Soup is one of the stalwarts here.
Ang Moh's simple fish soup.
The sea bass is fresh, tender and juicy. The sea bass meat has a slight earthly taste but it is balanced with its natural sweetness.
I like this fresh fish swim bladder 魚鳔 (raw fish maw) very much. It is tender, smooth and has a springy gummy feel to the bite. When chewed, it turns slightly creamy in the mouth. It tastes naturally gently sweet.
The soup is light, cloudy and tastes gently savoury and sweet with underlying hints of ginger and pandan.
Ang Moh stall serves a choice of white, vegetable 大菜飯 and yam rice 芋頭飯 with their soups. I like this clean tasting vegetable rice which has a slight bitter taste from the crunchy juicy Chinese mustard (dai gai choi in Cantonese 大芥菜).
The pork organ soup is clean tasting and the various pork innards are fresh.
I especially like this pork belly as it is very fresh, tender with a slight springy bite. The flavour of fresh naturally sweet pork was just wonderful. Next time, I shall just order soup with only pork belly slices 😋 It will be so satisfying.
4-Star (out of 5). Ang Moh Pork Organ Soup 紅毛豬雜湯 is a humble stall relying simply on fresh ingredients for their fish and pork organ soup. Ah Bing and his family are masters in preparing the fish and pork, and turning them into delicious dishes. They have also kept faith with the old methods, so we can still taste the nostalgic flavours of decades ago. Prices are very reasonable. Our pork organ soup with rice costs RM5.50. Two bowls of fish soup with rice costs RM12.50 (2017 price).
