JB social media has been abuzz recently about Warisan Kelate in Setia Tropika. When I bumped into Johor friends recently, they often asked me: "Have you tried the nasi kerabu in Setia Tropika?" Finally, now, I can say: "I did" 😄 And, it was great 😋

The most popular side dish with nasi kerabu is crispy fried chicken, but I couldn't resist these fried catfish (pecel lele). Although, catfish can taste earthly or muddy sometimes, I like their soft and juicy sweet meat.

Warisan Kelate's nasi kerabu is served on a plastic tray laid with waxed brown paper. In the middle is a mound of steamed rice coloured blue with butterfly pea flower. The signature blue rice was barely visible as it was blanketed by a salad of fresh greens, herbs and vegetables as well as spices and sauces. There's also fried fish crackers (keropok), salted egg, wickedly spicy sambal chili and my favourite fried catfish.

Nasi kerabu is eaten by breaking the keropok and mixing everything together - sambal chili, sauces, rice, greens, herbs etc - on the plate.

Every mouthful of nasi kerabu is truly an amazing carnival of flavours in the mouth - sweet, spicy, savoury all present in various shades blended beautifully together.

I am glad that I opted for the catfish as it was all sweetness and spice today with no earthiness or fishiness at all.

Sedap! 😋

Fried chicken, next time 😄

Next, nasi dagang with daging kerutuk.

A mound of tenderly firm, nutty white rice, brown rice, and glutinous rice held together by coconut milk. It's a blend of layers of sweetness with accents from the serundeng (fried grated coconut and spices), and crunchy achar (tangy sweet pickled vegetables).

The daging kerutuk is like beef jerky. It tasted deeply savoury salty and the beef was quite stiff and fibrous. The savoury salty daging kerutuk works very well with the sweet rice and together makes for a filling, satisfying meal.

I also had ikan tongkol bumbu to go with my nasi dagang. It's mackerel tuna in spices. The sauce was mildly spicy and the mackerel tuna though stiff and fibrous was flavoursome (reminding me of canned sardine).

4-Star (out of 5). Warisan Kelate is a simple, bare bones shoplot eatery operated by (camera shy) Bryan Liew and his family who hails from Kelantan. Bryan and wife are passionate about cooking and learnt the recipes from his mother who still lives in Kelantan.

Bryan was selling Kelantan food at a stall in Bukit Indah before moving to this shoplot in Setia Tropika recently. Warisan Kelate puts in a lot of effort to keep to the original recipes using fresh ingredients (some from Kelantan), making all the sauces from scratch and not taking short cuts. You will taste the difference with the first mouthful.

Will definitely be back for other Malaysian east coast specialties like nasi khao jam, ayam percek, nasi kukus, Kelantan laksa etc.
