Ah Chuan Fish Soup | 124-126, Jalan Sri Pelangi, Taman Pelangi | 8am - 12 noon
Ah Chuan Fish Soup 阿全鱼湯 in Taman Pelangi is simple and simply the best fish soup in JB, in my opinion lah.
Ah Chuan Fish Soup is a tiny stall in Starfood Corner 大福园 coffee shop.
It's a very busy corner of Taman Pelangi as it is along Jalan Seri Pelangi where the morning market (pasar pagi) is located on Mondays and Thursdays. Avoid these days, unless you want to visit the morning street market.
Lots of fresh ginger goes into Ah Chuan's fish soup.
We were kopitiam hopping today, so we just ordered this RM10 serving of fish meat and fish belly in soup to share.
Ah Chuan's plain looking soup is a winner.
Made by boiling chicken bones, fish bones and anchovies, it is given a dusting of powdered ti poh (dried sole fish) before serving. There were slivers of raw ginger, salted cabbage, tomatoes and spring onion which added flavours and aromas to the gently savoury soup. The soup was all flavour and no grease.
The fresh sea bass meat and belly are served in thick slices and strips (which I like as I can taste more flavour this way). The meat is tender and have a subtle earthly (sea bass) taste balanced with natural sweetness.
4-Star (out of 5) The gentle layers of savouriness in the clean tasting broth and the flavours of the julienned vegetables complemented the fresh sea bass' natural taste, making a humble but marvellous fish soup.

Was there ytd for lunch...ordered a big bowl (12rm). Very good, plain and honest to goodness fish soup that came with a small bowl of white rice. I can taste that Ah Chuan did not add any msg as flavour. But for big eaters like me, after the meal, still feel knd of "empty" tummy. I still gave the beaming Ah Chuan a thumbs up on the way out...
ReplyDeleteAnyone knows whether Ah Chuan is still operating at the Starfood coffeeshop. The fish soup stall at the same corner location no longer bears the "Ah Chuan" name, just plain "鱼片汤". Thanks
