When I requested for suggestions for steamed Song fish head in Kuala Lumpur, Ong Lai (Goh Kee) Restaurant 旺來(吳記)飯檔 was highly recommended by Johor Kaki readers.
So, we got here after navigating some narrow streets to Ong Lai (Goh Kee). It is at a side lane off Jalan Tong Nam 3, near the intersection of Jalan Tong Nam 3 and Jalan Raja Laut. (The WAZE App will take you exactly to this spot.)
It was raining lightly when we were at Ong Lai (Goh Kee). The action in the makeshift kitchen set against the shop's outside continues under large umbrellas like any other evening.
Customers can choose to sit inside the main dining hall. It is simply furnished but comfortable with air conditioning.
On cool evenings, many customers prefer to sit street side. I saw quite a few people arriving at Ong Lai (Goh Kee) in luxury marques.
Ong Lai (Goh Kee) serves a wide range of tze char 煮炒 dishes. My buddies recommended their Steamed Song Fish Head, Oyster Omelette, KL style Hokkien Mee, fried thick bee hoon (pek ker with good wok hei) etc.
Two of us, we ordered Ong Lai's signature Steamed Song Fish Head.
The Song fish head with belly (sliced in half through the middle) was completely wrapped in nappa cabbage, topped with julienned ginger, cilantro, julienned chili pepper and pieces of fatty pork belly.
The steamed fish head was kept warm in a shallow pool of sweet savoury "Superior Broth".
Unveiling the beautiful fish - it's lips thick, and soft skin gleaming.
The Song fish was fresh. The meat was tender and juicy. There was only very slight earthly taste which did not bother me at all as the dominant flavours were the fish's natural sweetness and complementary flavours from the ginger, nappa cabbage and tasty stock.
Melt in the mouth belly fat - it was sweet with a subtle earthly taste.
I love eating fish heads 😋
The thick soft smooth gelatinous skin on the face.
Soft tissue from between the head bones.
We also had a small serving of orh chien (oyster omelette).
Ong Lai's oyster omelette is good!
The oysters were thumb size, tender and juicy (but not mushy watery). They tasted briny sweet. The egg omelette with a sparing amount of sweet potato starch was nicely fried with delicious savoury and caramelised flavours. The banana leaf underneath imparted a nice sweet aroma to the omelette.
4-Star (out of 5). A slightly different kind of steamed Song fish head that uses less ginger or other spicy ingredients to mask the Song's fish natural earthly taste. Ong Lai (Goh Kee)'s Song fish tastes mainly naturally sweet with additional sweetness from nappa cabbage. Get also their oyster omelette. It's one of the best that I have tasted.
Our receipt.
