Bumped into Joe while running errands in Johor Bahru. It is always great to catch up with Joe. He bought me teh tarik and shared with me JB foodie tips. Many of the early Johor Kaki posts were tip offs from Joe. Thanks buddy! We agreed to meet the next day at his usual lunch hangout at Restoran 8 Ah Sam Kopitiam 豪美味 in Permas Jaya.
Economic rice known as chup chye png (in Hokkien) or chup fun (in Cantonese) or jing ji fun (in Mandarin) is ubiquitous in Singapore and Malaysia. It meets our basic needs for carbs and vitamins with convenient, no frills workday meals at an affordable price. However, many have lamented that economic rice is no longer cheap. Restoran 8 Ah Sam Kopitiam's chup chye png is still inexpensive and is quite tasty too.
At Restoran 8 Ah Sam, most of the dishes are ready by around 11am, peaking at 12 noon, and tapering off after dinner at 7pm where the stall morphs into a zhi char shop of sorts.
Ah Sam is popular with Permas Jaya residents, office workers in the area, and workers who work in Singapore. After returning from Singapore, Ah Sam is a good pit stop for workers who endure the gruelling border crossing daily.
Ah Sam have various chicken, pork, fish, egg, tofu and vegetable dishes. For carbs, they have rice, fried bee hoon, fried mee etc. I didn't count but there should be more than 50 items on the buffet spread.
Customers just take a plate from the staff, fill it up with food they like, and take it to the cashier where the price is tallied and payment collected. Very quick and efficient.
My first lunch at Restoran 8 Ah Sam. I don't know how much this was as it was Joe's treat. It's always good to cari makan (go find dining) with Joe 😄
Didn't know what long, skinny fish that was so I took one to try. It's a sort of salted fish, just mildly salty and fried to a crisp. Quite nice with plain white rice.
Overall, the dishes were flavourful and flavours were well balanced. The food were not overly sweet or salty, nor too greasy. Everything tasted just nice and ingredients were fresh.
My second trip to Restoran 8 Ah Sam. Two of us sharing, so we heaped our white rice with a splash of curry, lots of vegetables and a fried drumstick.
Restoran 8 Ah Sam serves this free flow of soup. The staff (boss' sister) said many of their customers are daily cross border workers who got no time to boil their own soup. It's a slow boiled home made soup - not hot water with MSG. So, this is homely comfort for tired and hungry workers.
The fried drumstick was nice though the inside wasn't that flavoursome as it was made with frozen meat. Still it is a fair deal and good protein for the money.
The vegetables were fresh, flavourful, crunchy and juicy.
Our lunch bill today, RM8. All the food, rice plus radish soup.
When we were finishing our meal, the boss recalling that I came with Joe before, gifted us a small serving of this ku lou yuk to try. It's good to be a friend of Joe's 😄 The boss said this sweet and sour pork is one their most popular dishes.
It's nice. The tender juicy sweetish pork was wrapped with batter which was well infused and coated with balanced savoury sweet flavours with a slight tang.
We tabao (take away) some more, go back then eat 😄 😋 Price RM10.
Recommended for you 👍 Economy rice that is still economic. Lots of dishes, mostly fresh ingredients, balanced flavours, not overly greasy, free flow of slow boiled home made soup. A good humble pit stop for everyone.
