My first time in Poland, first night in Warsaw and my first meal in a Polish restaurant, Mokotowska 69. After 2 months of anticipation since we began planning for the trip, expectations were sky high. Mokotowska 69 was exactly the type of charming warm local culinary experiences I was looking forward to.
The neon Mokotowska 69 sign on a quaint small round single storey house, nestled in the shadows of taller grey slab buildings. As we were staying nearby at the Mercure, we walked here taking in our first sights of Warsaw on a dry, cold 1st December night.
Pushing past the heavy wooden doors, coming into the warm interior, the first things I noticed were the huge wooden beams radiating from the centre of the roof, and the row of small Christmas trees (it was December already).
The red brick walls, dark wood furnishings, black leather chairs and dim orange lights are the worst enemies of cameras but give Mokotowska 69 a warm, cosy atmosphere perfect for intimate dining.
Wide range of wines on wooden racks which stood here and there around the whole restaurant like a library but of wines, not books.
A section with a long table was reserved for our party.
The menu was a mix of traditional Polish and dishes with international or regional influences.
Orders taken, wines flowed while the food was being prepared.
My carpaccio appetiser marinated with Polish Bison Grass brand vodka, mustard olive oil, and served with shaved artisan cheese. The serving size was larger than I expected for an appetiser. There was plenty of meaty fresh raw beefiness complemented by subtle zest and savoury sweet flavours.

Rachel's choice of Roasted Cornfed Chicken Breast with vegetables, butter sauce, and potato puree. I took a snap but not a bite. Rachel enjoyed it, so you might want to try it too.

During travel, I like to try local produce, so I zeroed in on the Masurian Catfish once I saw it on the menu. Poland's Masurian Lake District has over 2,000 lakes rich with fish.
Thick slabs of Masurian catfish sauteed and laid on a wet white mound of horseradish risotto. The catfish meat browned outside was white, flaky, tender and moist inside. It tasted savoury (from seasoning) with slight earthiness and underlying sweetness.
The savoury sweet catfish flavour was complemented by the sweet and subtly spicy horseradish risotto. The sweet risotto grains were tender with subtle nuttiness (softer than Italian style) and the rice mound was held together by creamy zesty horseradish sauce. A couple of sweet crunchy balls carved from Polish Paradise apple complete the dish.
For dessert, I opted for Napoleon cake for no other reason than I never had this before 😂 Sweet crispy biscuits layered with sweet creamy vanilla filling and various seasonal zesty fruits.
Recommended for you 👍 Tasty food with good fresh local ingredients, well executed. Good service. Nice ambiance in an atmospheric old building. Accessible near the centre of Warsaw. (Mokotowska 69 is also known for their premium steaks.)
