Marrybrown Fried Chicken @ Toppen IKEA Johor Bahru. Which Do You Like More - Marrybrown or KFC?

Today, we had Marrybrown fried chicken for lunch at their new outlet at Toppen IKEA mall in Johor Bahru. Marrybrown is a Johor homegrown brand founded in 1981 with over 350 outlets throughout Malaysia and international outposts in China, India, the Middle East, Central Asia, Africa etc. It all started from a humble shop lot at Jalan Wong Ah Fook in downtown JB and the brand is still growing.

We enjoyed Marrybrown fried chicken often when the children were toddlers. Their Lien Hoe Complex outlet in Taman Sentosa was one of our favourite JB day trip hangouts. I can't remember how the fried chicken tasted back then in the 1990s but we have fond memories of our meals there.

I expected to feel good at Marrybrown's today. I wasn't disappointed at all 😄

Since everyone will inevitably like to know how Marrybrown compares with KFC, I shall use Colonel Sanders' chicken as the benchmark.

The well browned batter forms a rather thick, stiff and crispy crust together with the chicken skin. It comes off the warm flesh below like a hinged flap. The crust and skin came off cleanly as one large piece in this piece of chicken breast we had.

The thick crust was crackly crispy and relatively dry (KFC's crust is thinner, moist and slightly greasier, in comparison).

The flavour was savoury salty with a bit of spiciness (as we ordered spicy flavour).

The warm meat was cooked through but was tenderly juicy. There was a bit of infused savouriness which complemented the natural chicky sweetness nicely.

Even the breast meat was tender, moist and nicely savoury sweet.

My impression is KFC JB's chicken meat has less infused savouriness but have about the same juiciness and natural sweetness as Marrybrown's.

👍 I enjoy both Marrybrown and Johor Bahru KFC with no strong preference for either. I will go for Marrybrown or KFC  depending on location, convenience and ongoing promotions.

Marrybrown or KFC - which do you prefer? Or, do you like other fried chicken brands more?
